Reconstruction of automobile collision accidents deals with the analysis of the cause of accidents and collision behavior using available information from vehicle accident circumstances. This paper provides an artificial intelligence technique for reasoning about collision behavior. We describe a qualitative analysis of instantaneous motions in rigid bodies. We develop a symbolic spatial representation to describe the dynamic behavior. We also explore a collision theory to reason about force transmission between two rigid objects.<br/>

The characteristics of three shell elements are investigated and compared for the selection of an appropriate element for the large-scaled impact analysis. The element coordinate systems are introduced for three shell elements. The performance for these elements is tested with three example problems in which curved shell and rigid pole are contacted. For the numerical examples, the geometries are made and meshes are generated using preprocessor FEMB, and the analyses are carried out by DYNA3D. The displacements and stresses are compared for each element, and the computational cost is compared, too. In this study, C°linear triangular element is the most effective for the impact analysis.<br/>
