민화는 사람들의 본능적인 회화의 의지와 욕구를 표출하며, 종교와 생활 관습 속에 얽힌 순수하고 대중적인 실용화였다. 우리 민족의 역사와 더불어 시작된것으로 선조들의 생활공간 일부로서 없어서는 안 될중요한 그림이며, 동시에 우리 민족의 얼이 깃든 민족화이다. 그러나 그동안 민화는 비전문적인 화가나 일반 대중들의 치졸한 작품 등을 일컫는 말로 치부됨과 동시에 ‘작가 미상’, ‘색채가 강한 독특한 그림’, ‘전문적인 그림 교육을 받지 못한 서민들의 그림’ 정도로만 여겨지며 일정 부분 등한시되어 온 것이 사실이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 민화를 우리 선조의 커뮤니케이션을 목적으로 한 디자인 행위였다는 가설을 전제로 민화 속에 담겨 있는 상징성을 이해하고 그 시대 사람들의 삶 속에서 민화가 어떤 역할을 담당했는지 연구.분석하였다. 이와 함께 타인과의 효과적인 의미전달을 궁극적인 목적으로 하는 시각디자인 관점에서 민화의 목적과 여백의 미를 재해석함으로써 민족화로서의 진정한 가치와 의미를 재정립하고자 한다. The folk paintings express the will and the desire of the instinctive paining in the people and are pure and popular practicalization related to the religion and the customs. Started together with the history of our nation, they are the important indispensable paintings as a part of the living space of the ancestors and are the nationalized paintings smeared the spirit of our nation at the same time. However, it is true that the folk paintings have been paid little attentions called with the words indicating the unprofessional painters`` works or the artless crude works and at the same time considered as the works of ``unknown artists``, ``the unique paintings having strong colors``, or ``the paintings of the ordinary people who had not received the professional education of the paintings`` so far. Therefore, in this study, the author tried to understand the symbolism smeared in the folk painting and analyzed what role it had been played in the life of the people in those times under the hypothesis that the folk painting was the design act of our ancestors. In addition, the author intended to reestablish the true value and meanings of the folk painting as a nationalized painting by reinterpreting the purpose and the beauty of the blank of the folk painting in the visual design perspective that has ultimate goal of effective communication of the meanings with the others.
