인간은 언어를 효율적으로 사용할 수 있지만 언어 처리 과정에서 심리적인 여러 원인이 관여한다. 이것의 한 형태로 언어 틱을 들 수 있다. 틱은 일반적으로 먼저 나타나는 운동 틱(얼굴 찡그림, 눈 깜박임 등)과 이후에 생기는 언어(음성) 틱이 있다. 언어 틱은 큰 소리를 내지 않고 헛기침, 끙끙거리는 소리 또는 단어, 문맥을 벗어나는 문장, 저속한 언어(coprolalia) 형태까지 다양하다. 이 두 종류의 틱이 복합된 형태는 뚜렛(Tourette) 증후군이다. 반면 프랑스어에서는 언어 틱과 관련하여 다른 사회 문화적 양상이 보인다.
