Use of Moringa Oleifera and Chitosan as Natural Coagulants to Treat Turbidity

저개발 국가의 경우, 깨끗하지 않은 물을 음용수로 사용하여 발생하는 수인성 질병으로 고생하는 인구가 상당하다. 적 은 비용으로 양질의 음용수를 생산할 수 있는 방법으로 정수처리에 사용되는 응집제 등을 인근지역에서 쉽게 구할 수 있는 재료를 이용하는 방법이 연구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 자연친화적이면서 식물로부터 유래한 모링가씨앗으로 만 든 천연응집제와 게와 같은 갑각류에서 추출한 키토산을 이용하여 탁질 제거를 수행하고, 이의 효율을 높일 수 있는 방안을 강구하고자 한다. 모링가와 키토산은 미얀마와 같은 동남아 지역에서 쉽게 구할 수 있는 재료이다. 이 두 가지 응집제는 카올린 인공수나 실제 자연호수의 탁질에 대해 우수한 제거능력을 보였다. 하지만 모링가의 경우, 응집처리 수에서 유기물농도가 증가하는 현상을 보였고, 이는 모링가씨앗 성분인 폴리펩타이드가 물에 용출된 때문이었다. 따 라서 키토산을 보조응집제로 이용하여 탁질제거능력을 확보함과 더불어 유기물 용출을 낮추고자 하였다. 적절한 응집 제 주입량을 이용하면, 약 90% 이상의 탁질제거와 함께 유기물농도 증가현상도 저감할 수 있음을 확인하였다. Recent and nowadays around the world, people are suffering and infecting some diseases by drinking impure water. Costeffective and sustainable technology to produce safe drinking water is one of the urgent needs in developing countries. This paper aims to remove turbidity using eco-friendly and plant-based natural coagulant, i.e., Moringa Oleifera seeds (MOS) and bioflocculant coagulant, i.e., chitosan. Natural coagulants are very cheap and can be sought easily in various developing countries. The both MOS and chitosan was evaluated for turbidity removal. Both coagulants showed great removal of turbidity from both kaolin and a natural lake water. However, the MOS showed increases in organic matter concentrations in the treated water because polypeptides, one of the ingredients of MOS, were leached to the water. The use of chitosan as a co-coagulant was examined. When the two are used as co-coagulant, they can perform better removal of turbidity. The use of natural coagulants with low cost and eco-friendly properties could satisfy urgent needs for the people who are drinking untreated water but cannot afford advanced technologies with high cost.
