Vol.- No.89

This paper examines how Atwood constructs the ethical stance of a transpersonal ecology which transcends the point of view of human beings. Transpersonal ecology suggests that the sense of self is expanded to include other entities through the identification process. The basic premise underlying identification is the experience of commonality which is paralleled with empathy. A sense of empathy here is generated not only by the mind but also by the body. An obvious place to start is the animal description is Atwood's poems. In her use of imagery combining animal and body, Atwood challenges a kind of solipsism in power in power structures. The animals in her work are engaged in a borderline process where openness to otherness is possible. Contextualized in the way in which her earlier works interrogate the binaristic structures, her collections You Are Happy and Interlunar emphasize interconnected relationships among humans and animals and the process of identification. As particularly signalled by 'Songs of the Transformed' in You Are Happy, animal poems demonstrate Atwood's respect for all life forms, transcending the species barrier. Animals are a recurring focus in Atwood's poetry and their different manifestations and forms enable us to trace the development of many themes.

Vol.52 No.3

This paper explores the way in which Canadian identity and split female subjectivity in Atwood’s The Journals of Susanna Moodie represents borderline states and the semiotic that substantiate dualities in Atwood’s poetry. While drawing upon Susanna Moodie, a 19th century emigrant Englishwoman, and her response to the Canadian landscape, the collection challenges the binary oppositions that regulate social and cultural behaviors. In so doing, Atwood presents wilderness where Moodie undergoes both self-division and an experience of harmonious natural order. Susanna Moodie’s construction of identity in relation to the wilderness, the threatening otherness, is a figure for Atwood’s interpretation of Canadian identity within the context of its immigration history and culture. The wilderness, as I would argue, could be interpreted in terms of Kristva’s concept of the abject in which the self experiences the boundary-subject. According to Kristeva, the abject, closely associated with the maternal body, resurfaces, triggering what may be described as the permeable boundaries between egos. In the collection, Moodie’s duality is a metaphor for Atwood’s aesthetics which resists fixing positions or structures in its violent duality.

Vol.22 No.5

The purpose of this study is to find an effective method of integrated building management system development for the building owner or manager. We consider the properties of the building, and maintenance information, and study the problems of the existing individual maintenance system, and evaluate what is to be considered in system implementation planning stage. This study shows that clarifying management goals in the early stages of integrated building management system is very important. It’s because the goals are key roles in the selection of the basic system configuration and it is possible to add the necessary systems. In particular, goals should contain set-up process, the building maintenance practitioner’s requirement and continual maintenance plan.

        "선택과 고유성의 기호"

최태숙(Tae Sook Choi) 한국영미어문학회 2014 영미어문학 Vol.- No.114

This paper examines how language functions as the source of tension in Plath's poems in which her personal tragedy is seemingly explicit or straight. The story of Plath's troubled life and early death strengthens her stance as a confessional poet while she uses autobiographical elements in her poems as a focus for exploring the relation between imagination and reality. As I would argue, Plath foregrounds death in a variety of ways, and yet also demonstrates a belief in writing as a means by which to protect the self. Challenging the pressure of reality, Plath tended to embrace the world of signs, however she happened very early onto the idea that human access to language marks the subject's coming into death, the gap. For Plath, language is by its very nature a kind of doubleness because it both empowers and overpowers her. In Lacanian thesis, language does not represent what it stands for, and intensifies the frustration of its user. In seeking to deal with subject matter that the confession poets opened up, Plath remains faithful to a New Critical aesthetic and brings the autobiographical form to the fore to show how the figurative claims the force and authority of the literal.

“목소리의 극장” 만들기: 에이드리언 리치의 『미드나이트 샐비지』

        최태숙(Choi, Tae-Sook) 새한영어영문학회 2013 새한영어영문학 Vol.55 No.3

Since the publication of her first volume, A Change of the World, Adrienne Rich has been a leading poet of her generation, challenging received ideals and poetic forms. Drawn to the notion of poetry as a communal art, Rich examines the world through her poetry and lays claim to the poet’s role of witness to a reality. For her, poetry is not an escape and provides no easy consolation. This paper explores the way in which dialogic relationships in Rich’s poetry embody her communal poetry that takes on the role of poetry as witness and engenders truth. As I would argue, Rich’s Midnight Salvage amplifies the poet’s social responsibility through a mosaic of voices in which dialogues challenge a unitary voice and create Kristevan revolutionary effects in poetic language. Engaging with Bakhtin’s theories on the subversive nature of carnivalesque discourse, Kristeva highlights the transposition of signifying systems that words make possible. Just as the interplay of multiple voices during carnival plays an important role in establishing a means by which to change social structures, so text that involves an act of communication effects a redistribution of reality. In Midnight Salvage many poems such as “Char” and “A Long Conversation” in particular pose how the words become social and contextual through the dialogic relationship. Although changes have marked Rich’s career, it is dialogism that consistently follows the trajectory in her works. Rather than merely a poetic method, Rich’s dialogic process conveys the central meaning and mood of her work.

Vol.- No.103

This paper aims to explore how Dickinson's complex poetry-writing exemplifies the way she challenges conventional attitude towards categories such as gender, sex and identity. While representing the erotic body, Dickinson taps poetic language that valorizes what is queering. It is through the understanding of the most fundamental levels of linguistic power that Dickinson amplifies her imagination and constructs her poetics of body. Drawing upon feminist readings of Dickinson's erotic desire, this paper examines the way in which bee bodies and variant words, dashes, and nuanced meaning in Dickinson's poems suggest her ample eroticism. Dickinson manipulates and recombines social and religious terms by creating poetic forms that twist received grammar and disrupts the subject/predicate propositions. Poetic language becomes the site for liminal gender, lesbian desire, and queering while she envisions the transgressive bee bodies that come close to the inscrutable and all-inclusive unconscious, subverting realist conventions. Dickinson's lesbian body or lesbianism, however, is not merely to manifest the importance of being woman, or consecrate feminity or a gynocentric world. Rather, her lesbianism calls into question the stability of gender. Insofar as grammar puts constraints on thought or on the thinkable itself, it would be wrong to use received grammar for expressing radical views. Dickinson's unusual poetic forms are clearly irritating for some readers, yet the significance of her poetry lies in this volcanic compositional radicality. For Dickinson, poetry is often engaged with love or sex, and the love is erotic bodily experience. Her poetics of body epitomizes Deleuzean signs of love that lead us to possibility, another world.

Vol.- No.130

This paper explores Plath’s poetic confessionalism by focusing upon her female expressiveness and poetic techniques that interrogate the gendered binary. While presented as personal, the metaphors of pregnancy and motherhood, and floral imagery in her poems disrupt the symbolic idealizations of archetypal feminity. As I will argue, confessionalism represents a troubled feature in Plath’s work that we repeatedly feel called upon to examine. Rather than seeking a real Plath brought about by the public exposure of her life, my primary focus will be upon the way in which Plath posits poetry as means by which to challenge conventional assumptions about gender, literary tradition, and metaphors. These aspects of her poems will be explored with particular reference to Dowson’s elaboration of Pollard’s notion of a new confessionalism, allowing for both critical and poetic processes. Of particular interest is how Plath’s poetic confessionalism through her skilful treatment of confessional elements enables a refreshing female aesthetic.
