“미역과 콘부”전을 통해 본 접촉지대로서의 한일의 바다

한국과 일본은 지리적 인접성으로 인해 문화, 종교, 경제적인 면에서 오랜 교류와 접촉의 역사를 지니고 있다. 일본 제국주의의 조선병합과 식민지배로 인해 악화된 양국의 관계는 현재에도 외교, 군사, 경제, 사회, 문화 등 다양한 분야에서 갈등의 양상을 보인다. 한국과 일본을 잇는 바다는 불편한 한일관계 속에서 대립과 침탈의 장으로 인식되어왔고, 특히 독도 영유권과 동해의 명칭을 둘러싸고 벌어진 논쟁 속에서 한일 사이의 바다는 공존과 교류의 장이 아니라, 배타적 소유와 침탈의 대상으로 인식되어왔다. 이 논문은 경계를 넘어서는 바다의 특성에 초점을 맞추어, 한일관계에서 기존의 대립과 이분법적 경쟁의 내러티브를 넘어서는 새로운 관점을 제시하는 대안적 접근의 한 가지로 바다가 제시되는 사례를 살펴본다. 이를 위해 국립민속박물관에서 2019년 10월부터 2020년 2월까지 진행되었던 “미역과 콘부: 바다가 잇는 한일의 일상” 기획전에 초점을 맞추어, 한일의 바다가 갖는 접촉지대로서의 특성을 분석한다. 바다로 이어지는 한일의 해양민속과 어업기술에서 보이는 평행성과 유사성, 그리고 차이성에 대한 전시 분석을 통해, 갈등과 충돌의 장으로 구성되어 온 한일 사이의 바다에 대한 기존의 언어를 넘어서는 해석틀의 가능성을 진단한다. Despite the geographical proximity and long-term interactions between each other, Korea and Japan have continued to build a tangled relationship mainly due to the historical experience of Japanese colonization of Korea (1910-1945). There has been a lot of tension between the two nation-states in diplomatic, military, economic, and sociocultural areas in the recent years, too. In particular, the ocean that mediates the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago has been regarded as a prominent site of conflict and provocation. Territorial disputes around Dokdo/Takeshima and the controversy surrounding the name of the East Sea/Sea of Japan further contributed in turning the ocean into an object for exclusive territoriality and and sovereignty rather than an environment of mutual exchange and coexistence. This article examines exemplary exhibition as an alternative perspective that transcends the hitherto predominant narrative of Korea-Japan relationship that have been based on dichotomous opposition and confrontation. The case in point is a special exhibition of “Miyok and Konbu: A Voyage into Maritime Cultures of Korean and Japan,” which was held at the National Folk Museum of Korea from October, 2019 to February, 2020. This exhibition was a result of long-term collaboration between the National Folk Museum of Korea and the National History Museum of Japan. In examining the special exhibition, the concept of “contact zone” is redefined and applied to the exhibit itself and the cooperation between the curatorial staff of Korea and Japan, to the ecological characteristics of the ocean, and to the maritime culture of Korea and Japan. Focusing on the similarities, parallels, and variations observed in maritime culture of Korea and Japan, this article explores a possibility of a new language that goes beyond the narrative of conflict and tension.
