매튜 폭스의 창조영성을 접목한 한국 가톨릭 환경운동의 방향 모색
현대 사회에서 세계인들에게 최고의 화두는 단연 ‘환경’이라고 말할 수 있을 것이다. 기상 이변, 지구 온난화, 생물종의 멸종, 사막화 현상 등 이루 다 말할 수 없는 생태계 파괴의 실상이 인간의 생존을 위협하고 있다. 이런 심각한 생태계 파괴의 현실 안에서 우리는 이제 생태계 파괴로 인한 문제 해결을 위해 다각적인 노력을 하고 있다. 이런 차원에서 전 지구적으로 지역과 사회 그리고 국가와 인종을 뛰어 넘어 생태계의 회복을 위해 여러 가지 연구를 통한 대안과 방향이 제시되고 있다. 생태계 파괴라는 문제를 해결하기 위해서 가장 중요한 것은 문제를 일으키게 한 정확한 원인을 규명하는 것이다. 하지만 이 원인이 어느 하나라고 지목될 수 없을 만큼 생태계 파괴의 원인은 다면적이라고 할 수 있다. 거기에는 철학적 요인과 가치체계의 변화로 인한 원인과 전통적 창조신학이 갖는 한계 그리고 인간의 생활양식과 행동양식을 포함하는 총체적인 원인이 있기 때문이다. 그러나 이 모든 원인들 사이에 나타나는 공통적인 요소가 있는데 그것은 나를 포함한 세상 모든 만물이 하나로 연결되어 있다는 상호의존 의식의 결여라는 것이다. 그러므로 생태계의 파괴에 관한 문제를 해결하기 위한 가장 일차적인 것은 만물의 상호의존 의식을 회복하는 것이다. 이것을 그리스도교 신학 안에서는 하느님께서 세상을 창조하셨을 때 주어진 창조질서의 회복이라고 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 창조질서의 회복에 있어서 필자는 생태신학자인 매튜 폭스가 주장하는 창조영성의 회복이 긍정적인 역할을 할 수 있다고 생각한다. 폭스는 세상의 모든 창조물이 원축복을 지니며 서로 긴밀한 연관 관계를 가지고 있다는 생각을 바탕으로 자신의 사상을 펼치기 때문이다. 그래서 생태신학과 생태영성의 기반이 부족하다는 평가를 받고 있는 한국 가톨릭 환경운동을 폭스의 창조영성과 접목해서 한국 가톨릭 환경운동의 새로운 방향을 여섯 가지로 모색해 보았다. 첫째, 창조영성과 자비(감수성) 회복 운동으로서 환경운동이다. 둘째, 창조영성과 대안 문명운동으로서 환경운동이다. 셋째, 창조영성과 신학과 제반 학문과 연대로서 환경운동이다. 넷째, 창조영성과 종교 간 대화 운동으로서 환경운동이다. 다섯째, 창조영성과 환경정의 운동으로서 환경운동이다. 여섯째, 창조영성과 생태문화 운동으로서 환경운동이다. 이와 같은 여섯 가지 환경운동의 방향은 한국 가톨릭 환경운동에 새로운 활력을 불어넣을 수 있는 대안으로 제시될 수 있다. There is no doubt that one of the global buzzwords these days is 'environment.' Environmental degradations, as witnessed by climate change, global warming, extinction of species, desertification and so on, put all human beings in danger. Against this backdrop, we are now making a lot of efforts to deal with the environment-related problems. Part of the effort is to give guidelines and propose alternatives to help the nature restore itself, which go way beyond community, country, and race. In order to solve the problem of environmental degradation, we should put the top priority on finding what exactly caused it. A number of factors, however, have worked behind the environmental destruction, so we cannot put a finger on just one. Traditional values have changed, creational theology came to limit itself, philosophy was one of the factor, and the way we live and behave has also changed as well. No matter how many factors worked, there should be something in common, which is we are lacking in sense of interdependence that everything in the world, including me, depend on each other in one way or another. Therefore, the first step we should take to tackle the problem is to help ourselves restore the sense of interdependence. In christian theology, that is to recover the creationism which was established when God created the universe. In reviving creationism, I believe that creational spirituality claimed to be restored by Matthew Fox, an ecotheologist, will play a positive role. That is because Fox established his theory based on that everything created by God is originally blessed and closely related with each other. Thus I propose that the Catholic Environmental Movement in Korea, which is considered lacking in both eco-theology and eco-spirituality, be supplemented with Fox' creation spirituality to put forth six guidelines. First, environmental movement to restore creation spirituality and mercy (sensitivity). Second, environmental movement as an creation spirituality and alternative. Third, environmental movement as a combination of creation spirituality, theology and related areas. Forth, environmental movement as an interchange between creation spirituality and religion. Fifth, environmental movement as creation spirituality and environmental righteousness. Sixth, environmental movement as creation spirituality and eco-culture. The six guidelines as proposed above can be an alternative to reinvigorate the Catholic Environmental Movement in Korea.
