『생쥐와 인간』에 대한 운명 결정론적 해석이 남긴 과제

존 스타인벡의 『생쥐와 인간』에 대한 국내 선행연구는 우정과 꿈 그리고 비목적론 등 이 작품을 옹호하는 자들의 담론을 소개하는데 정체되어있다. 하지만, 해롤드 브룸 등 비판론자들은 조오지가 레니를 사살한 마지막 장면을 운명 결정론적으로 해석하여 작품성을 평가절하하고 있다. 이 논문은 이 작품의 예술성에 대한 미국 현지의 연구 동향과 담론을 고찰하여 국내 학계에 새로운 과제를 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구방법은 우선 비판론자와 옹호론자의 담론과 국내연구의 동향을 소개하고, 운명 결정론적 해석으로 만들어진 주장들의 내용을 살펴본다. 그리고 결론에서 이와 같은 비판에 대한 견해를 밝히고, 향후 국내연구가 지향하여야 할 과제를 제시한다. 마지막으로, 이 연구가 영국과 미국의 고등학교에서 오랫동안 교과서로 사용되고 있는 『생쥐와 인간』에 대한 연구의 폭을 충분히 넓히는데 기여하길 바란다. The Korean precedent study regarding John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men remains sluggish while exporting the argument by the supporters of this work, such as friendship, dreams, non-teleology, etc. However, the negative critics, including Harold Bloom, are devaluating its quality by interpreting the last scene that George shoots Lennie deterministically. This paper aims to provide new tasks to Korean academia by observing the research tendency and discourse in the U.S. regarding the artistry of this work. The research method is first introducing the discussion between the negative critics and the supporters and the trend of the Korean study and then examining the details of the opinions made by the deterministic interpretation. In the conclusion, this research states the views to such criticism and suggest the future tasks the Korean academia should pursue. Lastly, it is hoped that this study will contribute to expanding the study range related to Of Mice and Men used as a textbook in the English and American high schools for a long time.
