This study aims to suggest the place branding methods applicable for regenerated idle industrial facilities. The place branding methods were analyzed by separating into hard branding methods and soft branding methods, and the results of the study are as follows : As for the hard branding methods, the exterior, outer wall materials and interior materials of the building and industrial equipment are preserved to revive the historicity of the building. In order to organize a differentiated space, it is important to create the convenience space such as cafes, experience space, lounge, and restaurants as well as the space for the operation of the programs. The building itself is utilized as a landmark or the iconic facility such as the winding tower or chimney is utilized as a landmark. As the methods of introducing natural elements, there is a need to create the resting space, law area and water space where trees can be planted and landscape can be viewed, and the development of tourism products utilizing the peripheral resources and the link of programs are also important. As for the soft branding methods, the provision of programs where a variety of art genres and the sense of place are reflected and the programs linked to the region is needed, and the story of place can be shared by storytelling utilizing the work and programs reflecting the sense of place. In addition, the content development and physical improvement of facilities reflecting the needs of visitors and the establishment of the organic collaboration system of a variety of subjects are needed for the sustainability of place.

As society alters and building ages, many industrial facilities lost their function and abandoned in central city areas, and sometimes creating many problems. However, many European countries successfully transformed those urban decay to vivid cultural hub. The purpose of this study was to analyze a concept and methods of converting idle industrial facilities to successful cultural spaces. A case study of Tate Modern, Baltic Center for Contemporary Art, and Ruhr Museum was conducted using literature review, site visit, and interview methods. Findings indicated that converting historically significant idle industrial facilities to cultural center had not only reused abandoned site but also helped regenerating adjacent urban areas. This article demonstrates the key factors of successful conversion strategies as convenience, participation, placeness, historicity, and accessibly; and thus an effort to actively enhance the strategic factors were demanded in future conversion projects. A continuous studies on exploring extensive cases in various perspectives are required for further generalization in future studies.

As the importance of economic value of culture has increased, governments have set a strategy to secure national competitiveness through cultural art. One of concrete ways is establishing a cultural space by using idle facilities. This study aims to analyze publicness of Seoul Art Space, suggest ways to improve the facilities of creative space and provide basic date for the further plan of creative space. The object of this study is 8 facilities from Seoul Art Space which is operated by City of Seoul. Through literature review, we extracted 5 elements(each element has 4 sub categories) for publicness(accessibility, openness, convenience, historical connectivity and stay time) and to evaluates publicness of the Seoul Art Space, we analyzed these facilities based on these elements. The results are as follows: The publicness of Seoul Art Space acquired 96.9%(100% is 64 points) for stay time, 95.3% for convenience, 90.6% for accessibility, 73.4% for openness and 62.5% for historical connectivity. For the openness, we suggest to use glass materials and open the space to the public. To improve historical connectivity, we suggest to determine appropriate theme for a particular space or area and set a function of buildings for the differentiation.

As post-industrialization is progressed and the information-oriented times come, idle industrial facilities left alone, losing their function, take place. Such buildings have social and cultural value and historicity. Therefore, if they are well utilized, they can be good resources. In such a context, urban regeneration policy through culture is making an active progress in the whole world. A lot of advanced Western countries already realized urban regeneration by converting idle industrial facilities to a cultural space. From 2008, South Korea is also promoting a project to recreate idle industrial facilities with culture. For an effective design methodology to meet such demands of the times, conversion design can be utilized. Conversion design means attaching new features to a space left alone by adding a creative program to the existing building. In conversion design, new elements are added to the existing old elements. Therefore, it is important to apply the two kinds of elements. How the two kinds of elements are preserved and regenerated can be classified as follows. First, it can be classified into all preservation, partial preservation and all removal according to how many old elements are preserved. Second, it can be classified into assimilation, contrast and all remodeling how to regenerate old elements by adding new elements. The study analyzed conversion design used for Tate Modern and Baltic Center for Contemporary Art in England regarded to be a successful case of conversion. The study examined methods of preservation and regeneration by dividing conversion design in the two cases to a contextual side and a spatial side. The purpose of the study was to grope conversion design methodology to apply them to Korean reality on the basis of the above research.

This study aims to find out the research trend of previous researches on smart technology applied space in the field of spatial design in Korea. 77 research articles were collected for investigation and analyzed them by publication year, by target space, by research purpose and research methodology. As to the research methodology, the SPSS Statistics 20.0 program was used to conduct a frequency analysis and crosstabs. The research results can be summarized as follows. 1) The research for smart technology applied space was begun in 2003 and was peaked in 2015. 2) For the target space analysis, residential spaces were the most common subjects of analysis. 3) For the research purpose, the studies focused on suggesting the planning direction and examining the current status of smart technology applied space accounted for 57.1% of the entire previous researches. 4) For the research methodology, some qualitative analysis such as case study and literature review were used by the researchers frequently.
