The term of the X-By-Wire is commonly used to describe the notion of replacing conventional mechanical or hydraulic systems with pure electro-mechanical systems. The X-By-Wire system, which is comprised sensors, actuators and controllers, must be designed as a distributed system comprising a number of fault-tolerant units connected through a reliable real-time communication system. This paper presents the Shift-By-Wire system based on the Fault Tolerant Architecture and confirms the reliability in the real vehicle.
