헤르만 바빙크(H. Bavinck)의 교육을 위한 성경심리학적 인간론

바빙크는 기독교교사들에게 기독교교육이론과 실천의 기초가 되는 심리학 지침을 제공하려는 의도에서 성경심리학을 구성하였다. 성경심리학은 성경 자료로부터 인간영혼의 본질과 구조를 밝혀 교육활동에 기초적 도움을 주려는 시도를 의미한 명칭이다. 바빙크의 성경심리학에 따르면 인간은, 살아있는 한 영혼으로서 단일한 퍼스날리티이며, 인류는 모두 동일한 본성을 가지고 있다. 물질로 구성된 육체는 하나님이 창조하신 작품이다. 영혼은 감정과 열망과 자기의식의 실체이다. 영은 하나님으로부터 온 생명의 원동력, 감정과 이해와 의지의 원천, 고상한 삶의 원천이다. 영혼과 영은 본체적으로는 구별되지 않는, 동일한 것을 뜻한다. 마음은 영혼의 중심기관이며, 지성, 감성, 욕망, 의지와 연관된, 퍼스날리티 전체를 통해 스스로를 표현한다. 성경심리학은 인간의 신적 기원과 목적, 특별한 지위와 가치, 인류의 단일성과 본성의 동일성, 개별성과 유대성 등의 통찰을 제공함으로써 기독교 교육이론과 교육활동을 차별화하고 탁월하게 한다. 바빙크의 성경심리학은, 개혁신학과 기독교세계관의 기초에서, 성경이 학문작업에 줄 수 있는 통찰의 실제를 보여주었다. 그의 성경심리학은 성격상 철학적 심리학이어서 영혼의 본질과 구조에 집중하였고, 영혼의 기능과 발달, 동기와 심리장애 등의 이해에는 별로 도움을 주지 못했다. 발달과 학습 등 교육심리학의 주제들을 상세히 다루지 못하여 기대만큼 실제적인 기여를 하지는 못했다. 물론 이러한 한계는 그의 시대 학문수준의 한계, 성경자료 제한의 한계에서 온 것이다. 그의 주된 기여는 인간에 대한 성경적 서술의 분석과 정리, 그리고 성경, 신학, 기독교세계관으로 심리학을 구성하려는 기독교적 시도에 있었다고 볼 수 있다. Herman Bavinck wrote “Biblical Psychology”, a part of his book, describing the psychological nature and structure of human being, in order to give fundamental and practical guide to Christian teachers. According to his Biblical psychology, man is a living soul, a personality, as well as everybody has the same nature. The body composed of materials, is a good work created by God. A soul is the subject of emotion, affection and self-consciousness. A spirit is the driving force of life coming from God, and the source of emotion, understanding, will, and noble life. A soul and a spirit are not differentiated in essence each other. A heart as a central organ of the soul, represents itself as a personality in connection with intellect, emotion, desire, and will. Biblical psychology, according to Bavinck, gives differentiation and excellence to Christian education, in comparison to modern humanistic education, as it gives many important insights in education to the origin and the purpose of human being, his peculiar status and dignity, the same nature of humanity, individuality and solidarity. Bavinck`s book was a practical example of Christian academic approach to psychology on the basis of the Bible, Reformed theology and Christian world view. His Biblical psychology, however, was in fact, a philosophical psychology focusing on the essence and the structure of human being, not a modern scientific psychology describing in the psychological function and development of personality, the motivation of behavior, and psychological disorders. Bavinck did not explain the cognitive development of children and the learning process, which are main subtitles in educational psychology. Such limitations were derived from academic developmental condition of his days, and from limited materials in the Bible. Therefore, his main contribution can be found both in his Biblical analysis and description of man and his soul, and in a significant attempt to form a Christian psychology textbook for teachers on the basis of the Bible, Reformed theology, and Christian world view.
