        Torque converter in automatic transmission transfer the engine power to transmission by ATF. Lock-up clutch of torque converter in automatic transmission has been recently designed with a significant purpose of achieving a more fuel economy. To reduce more fuel consumption, the slip is generated between a friction facing and a front cover for torque converter lock-up clutch. Also many studies of NVH and durability have been in order to increase lock-up area. In a lock-up clutch system a friction plate is one among key elements of torque transfer and is a made of wet friction material by synthetic fiber. The surface roughness of the front cover contact area, the friction material, the cooling condition and damper characteristics in a torque converter are important design parameters for the improvement of NVH and durability. Factors decide characteristics of friction material and material composition, apply pressure, rotation speed, ATF temperature. This test evaluates response time of Coasting lock-up clutch responsiveness in a torque converter.

        The automatic transmission’s vehicle have a lot of advantages as like the driving convenience, comfortable movement, soft change of speed and low transmission in comparison with manual vehicle. But, the power loss in auto transmission is inevitable because that generally has the characteristic that the power is transferred by the fluid. For this reason, the general auto transmission vehicle has a lower fuel efficiency than manual one. So, in order to make up for this disadvantage, the lock up function of torque converter is often used for improving this weak point. As the system that help the engine connect to transmission side directly, lock up clutch has the similar composition and characteristic of clutch in manual vehicle and also can improve the fuel efficiency in high-speed condition. By increasing the torque capacity that transfer the transmission by high-torque of engine, the lock up capacity also should be increased. For increasing the lock up capacity of lock up clutch, the wet frictionmaterial is one of the main functions. In order to extend the friction area of wet friction material, the twin facing friction material has been on the rise. When working the lock up clutch, the lock up capacity is increased because the twin facing material is connected between piston and front cover side. In contrary, this process can also cause the drag torque that is one of the main reason of low fuel efficiency due to this drag torque makes the unnecessary load to engine. The major factors that can determine that friction characteristic and durability life are basically ingredient materials, operation oil and control condition. In case of the control condition, the contact surface and rotation speed are an important factors for friction characteristic and durability of friction material. Though this study, it can be used for checking the influence on how much twin facing friction material impact the drag torque converter and conducting the study on the major factors of decreasing the drag torque while designing and controlling.
