연구논문 2 : 니클라스 루만의 종교이론: 지구사회의 자기생산적 소통으로서의 종교

니클라스 루만의 체계이론은 조직연구나 의사소통연구, 생태학 등 현대사회에 대한 여러 분야의 연구에서 사용되고 있다. 이 글은 루만의 이론적 통찰이 현대의 세계에서 종교의 위치나 의미, 변화를 설명하는 데에도 보다 더 광범위하게 쓰일 수 있다고 전제한다. 필자는 먼저 루만의 체계이론의 주요 내용을 사회적 기능체계의 분화에 대한 이론적 진술과 근대사회의 형성에 대한 역사적 기술을 중심으로 설명한다. 다음으로 오늘날 지구사회의 구성을 16-18세기 이후 기능적으로 분화된 사회체계들이 세계적 차원으로 확장되는 지구화의 과정으로 설명한다. 이러한 루만의 사회체계이론과 지구화론을 바탕으로 하여, 종교체계의 주요한 특징들을 설명한다. 이를 위해 근대의 종교체계가 고유한 코드와 기능을 가진 자기참조적으로 분화된 자기생산적 소통체계로서 나타나게 된 과정에 집중한다. 마지막으로 필자는 종교와 다른 세속적 사회영역들 간의 관계, 근대사회에서 종교의 개념화 등 근대세계의 여러 종교적 현상과 쟁점들을 루만의 종교이론을 원용하여 분석하는 방식을 모색한다. 이를 통해 루만의 종교이론의 장점과 단점에 대한인식을 시도한다. Niklas Luhmann`s systems theory has been applied to many areas of contemporary social research from organizational studies to communication studies, and to ecology. This essay is intended to examine how Luhmann`s theoretical insights can be used to explain the meaning and location of religion in the contemporary social world. The author first offers the gist of Luhmannian social systems theory, by succinctly mapping his theoretical argument on systems theory and the historical development of modern society. Secondly, the construction of today`s world society is explained as the process of globalization through which functionally differentiated societal systems have been increasingly worldwide since the 16th and 18th centuries. And then, based on the displayed summary of the Luhmannian systems theory and his version of globalization theory, the author explains some key concepts of the religious system and the historical process in which a modern religious system has risen as one of the self-referentially differentiated autopoietic communication systems that have their respective codes and functions. Finally, the author grope for the possible ways of applying Luhmannian theory to a variety of religious issues and phenomena such as religious organization, relationship between religion and the secular social spheres, and the conceptualization of religion in a globalized modern social world, by offering some examples of the theoretical applications.
