EPS (Electric Power Steering) having merits of fuel efficiency, driver’s convenience, environmental friendly and good maintenance has continuously evolved for high power, low friction, noise and ripple. Motor embedded in EPS accounts for major portion of the required characteristics. Hence, many researches on the motor have been made and still going on. This paper establishes the formula for cogging torque and torque ratio of step skew type motors compared to non-skew and introduces the cogging torque simulator for the sake of time saving and parametric influence studies. The results of calculation formula and numerical approach by the developed simulator were validated with 2D FEA analysis. Then the optimal skew angle was compensated in accordance with 3D FEA analysis and experimental results. In result, one can make a good and efficient cogging torque design and set up own strategies to reduce it.
