Strings and ribbons were the fastings for underclothes until the middle of the 17th century when they were replaced by buttons. Thoughout the Middle Ages, the underclothing of both sexes possessed a characteristic inherited from earlier times. The fuction of the underclothing was purely utilitarian. The idea of underclothes was associated with the idea of the body's sinfulness. During the Tudor regime, it began to assist the external costume in expressing class distinction. And the male waist is supposed to have been constrict. It was to exploit the grandeur of the costume evidence of rank. In addition, the underclothing was used to enhance sex attraction indirectly. Important changes were made in the line of the neck. During the Stuart period, the underclothes of both sexs developed a new significance.
