This paper analyzes how consumer`s preference for Hanwoo beef is affected by the consumer`s response to the recent changes in beef marketing policies such as traceability and COOL (Country Of Origin Labeling), the consumer`s increasing concern with respect to the food safety and health issues, and the personal and family related social characteristics. To resolve the problem of ordered nature of consumer`s preference to Hanwoo beef, which is the dependent variable of the estimation model, the ordered logit regression method is employed. The results imply that consumer`s positive attitude to the recent changes in beef marketing policies as well as the other concerns relevant to the food safety issues seem to make Korean consumer prefer the Hanwoo beef rather than the imported beef.

This analysis indicates that generic advertising, ceteris paribus, generated rightward shifts in demand for pork in Korea. The effects of pork advertising on demand for the less-favored specialty pork are estimated using a limited dependent variable model. Consumers` recognition and favor for the generic advertising are incorporated into the model as both demand shifters. The ordered logit estimation is employed to resolve the ordered nature of consumer`s pork consumption. Generally, the results from this study suggest that generic advertising on the less-favored specialty pork could increase the chance of expanding consumption for it.

This study estimates the cross price elasticity of Hanwoo beef to the imported. Using the regression diagnostics such as a variable transformation and the outlier detection methods, this analysis investigates the improved estimates for the Hanwoo beef’s cross price elasticity. The results from this study suggest that the estimate of the cross price elasticity of Hanwoo beef is between 0.1344 and 0.254, indicating that the substitutability of Hanwoo beef to the imported is low. The changes in Hanwoo beef demand is very sensitive to consumer’s income.
