Using the data from the 2002 Korean Innovation Survey (KIS), this study empirically examines the innovation activities of incumbents and potential entrants. In particular, the study investigates both product and process innovation activities of incumbents and entrants. We apply a bivariate ordered probit model in order to nalyze the joint behavior of product and process innovations. The estimation results indicate that potential entrants are more innovative than incumbents both in product and process innovations. Our estimation results thus do not support the theoretical implication of Gilbert and Newbery (1982) which raises a possibility of pre-emptive nnovation by the incumbent.

The paper examines the role of vertical linkage in determining foreign ownership. Using the 2007 Survey of Business Stature and Activity, our empirical analysis shows that foreign-owned firms are more likely to supply intermediate inputs to the industry of their parent firms than domestically- owned firm. Vertical linkage becomes stronger as the geographic distance between foreign-owned firms and their parent firms increases. The result suggests that foreign parent firms might choose vertical integration to reduce adjustment costs in accessing the Korean market.

This paper conducts empirical analysis on productivity difference among groups of firms that perform different globalization strategies such as exports and foreign direct investments. Using data on the Survey of Business Structure and Activities provided by the Statistics Korea, we set up three groups of firms (domestic firms, exporting firms, and foreign direct investment firms) and use Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests to examine if there is any productivity differential among those groups. Our results show that the level of productivity of exporting firms is higher than that of domestic firms; and the productivity of foreign direct investment firms is even higher than that of the exporters. The results of the productivity ordering are robust to various considerations such as capital intensity, R&D intensity, presence of parent firms, and continuation of the same globalization strategy. The contribution of the paper to the literature is the first empirical study showing that the globalization strategy of Korean firms is determined by firm-specific factors using firm-level dataset.

Using data from 2002 Korean Innovation Survey, the study investigates the employment effects of innovation activities in Korean manufacturing firms. In particular, the study examines how the employment effects of innovation activities in information and communications technology(ICT) firms are different from those in non-ICT firms. The estimation results suggest that product innovation is strongly associated with employment growth. Moreover, the employment effects of product innovation are not significantly different in between ICT and non-ICT firms. On the other hand, the net effect of process innovation on employment growth turns out to be insignificant for both ICT and non-ICT firms because displacement effects offset compensation effects.

In this paper, we investigate the determinants of R&D cooperation in Korean information and communications technology (ICT) manufacturing firms. In particular, we focus on the differing role of determinants in R&D cooperation between ICT firms and non-ICT firms. Using data from the 2005 Korean Innovation Survey, we employ a probit model with sample selection to correct a possible sample selection problem arising from firms` decision on R&D cooperation and innovation. Since non-innovative firms which make up almost half of the sample firms in the Korean Innovation Survey, results based on a probit model utilizing only innovative firms could be biased. As expected, we find positive correlations between the decisions of firms` R&D cooperation and innovation. Based on estimation results, we find that incoming spillovers of knowledge have a positive and significant effect on the probability of ICT firms` engaging in R&D cooperation. In contrast, the incoming spillovers do not have a significant effect on the R&D cooperation of low-tech firms. The results suggest that the role of incoming spillovers in R&D cooperation could be different among firms according to their technology characteristics. Our results also indicate that the firms` absorptive capacity positively influences the likelihood of cooperating in R&D. On the other hand, appropriability turns out to be not an important factor for R&D cooperation. Constraints on innovation such as innovation cost, uncertainty, and the lack of information on technology seem to be not significantly related with the probability of R&D cooperation.

In the paper, we examine the effect of large discount stores` entry on improvement in service quality of traditional markets in Korea. To measure service quality, we use the credit card acceptance rate of a traditional market that is considered as a major complaint of shoppers in the traditional market. Using data on Survey on Traditional Markets in 2008 and 2010, we find that the entry of large discount stores into a county results in 3.9% point increase in the credit card acceptance rate of a traditional market in that county. The result suggests that merchants in traditional markets have a strong incentive to improve their service quality to avoid the risk of losing customers in spite of the increased costs due to the fee paid for credit card transactions. The study provides empirical evidence that the intensified competition increases consumer welfare through improvement in service quality of incumbents.

Estimating the empirical entry model developed by Bresnahan and Reiss(1991), this paper examines the extent to which the entry of a large discountstore into a region changes the competitive conduct. In order to calculate theentry thresholds, we utilize county-level geographic information of three largediscount stores: Emart, Homeplus, and Lottemart. The analysis shows that alarge discount retailer in Korea receives a small amount of excess profits frommonopolistic or oligopolistic market. The entry of an additional large discountretailer promotes competition, but the effect on the degree of competition isnot substantial.
