Wet clutch is widely used for the power flow distribution in various mechanical systems. Especially, in the automatic transmission system wet clutch is adapted in the forms of multi disc clutch and lock-up clutch subsystems. Wet clutch is made of soft paper based friction material and metal plate for the mating friction performance and it is operated under high hydraulic pressure for the clutch engagement. All of the engagements are working under the ATF environment that has the function of less frictional contact behaviors. In this study, the contact deformation, surface roughness, porosity behaviors of paper based friction material and the centrifugal effects of ATF during the engagement process are studied.

The lock-up clutch in the torque converter can improve highly the efficiency of power transfer from an engine by locking up with the transmission gears directly at a high speed instead of fluid coupling. Upon locking up, NVH problems take place due to shudder, friction material characteristics, and so on. Front cover taper angle, friction material, contact surface roughness and damper characteristics are important design parameters for improvement of drivability. Front cover taper angle is based on the surface pressure between front cover and friction facing. In this study, the pressure distribution of the contact surface is analyzed by finite element method and Non-linear material condition. Also, we propose design optimization method for slip-control torque converter taper angle.

This paper presents reliability improvement of damper spring in torque converter by establishing durability life of the spring because the durability verification of the lock-up clutch damper spring according to the operational environment is essential. It was investigated the performance and durability characteristics of the damper spring at various application temperatures. The durability life impact factors such as contraction and wear quantities for damper spring were also examined.
