A numerical study of the aerodynamic interference between road vehicles overtaking process was performed. A simplified vehicle-like body was employed. Steady state calculation was followed. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the effect of wake structure behind the road vehicle and its aerodynamic characteristics at overtaking in tunnels. Regarding the computational method, a Navier-Stokes solver employing k-ε RNG turbulent model with upwind difference scheme was applied. The Cd and Cp on both sides of each vehicle at overtaking was calculated, and it was found that drag coefficient increased abruptly and the wake pattern changed drastically in the process of overtaking.
Flow Field Measurements in a Torque Converter

Flow fields within production automotive torque converters are poorly understood. Flow fields are extremely complex, in that they contain three-dimensional flows, are viscous, and unsteady. To add to the complexity, the difference in rotor speeds between the impeller and turbine compound the flow effects. There have been numerous studies on the operation of torque converters. The shortcoming was few of the studies were performed in an actual automotive torque converter in realistic operating conditions. The purpose of this study was to measure the internal flow fields experimentally in a production torque converter. The use of LDV measurements make it possible to examine the internal flow characteristics of the torque converter.
