The “Internet of Things” (IoT) refers to a connection of various objects within a network by means of the internet. Through utilising these IoT devices, information can be shared remotely. Conventional IoT devices rely on the use of batteries as a power source. However, the use of batteries within such devices can be quite restrictive on the way devices operate to prolong battery life. To overcome this challenge, self-powered IoT devices with low-light energy-harvesting capabilities via photovoltaic cells have been proposed. In this work, we demonstrated an effective formation of a hole-selective carrier layer strategy using a PEAI post deposition process for the wide bandgap perovskite solar cells for powering IoT devices under indoor conditions. We employed the deposition of a proper amount of PEAI (2 mg) salt that can lead to formation of a thin layer on top of the original film due to the strong interaction of PEAI with the surface and grain boundaries. Under indoor light conditions (cool white LED at 200 lux), surface photovoltage increases by 120 mV after the post deposition and homogeneous charge formation occurs in terms of morphology. The J-V characterisation results indicate that hysteresis significantly reduces due to the hole-selective carrier layer of the PEAI deposited device. The performance of the PEAI deposited PSC demonstrates a power density of 18μW/㎠ with impressive Voc of 0.9 V under an extremely low illumination (200 lux). PV module fabricated using these cells can produce maximum power of 223 μW, 510 μW, 1023 μW, and 1273 μW at 200, 400, 800, and 1000 lux respectively under a halogen light. These power outputs are enough to operate low-power wireless protocols such as RFID, LoRA, passive Wi-Fi, BLE, ANT, and ZigBee under different indoor light intensities (200-500 lux).
