The purpose of this paper is to study the behavior of vertical anchor plate in cohesive soils. The model tests for the Kaolinite were conducted to define the ultimate holding capacity and the load-displacement relationship of a vertical anchor plate. In general, the ultimate holding capacity is expressed in terms of a non-dimensional breakout factor (Fc=Pu/(Cu·A)). As the results of this study, the followings can be determined. The breakout factor increases with an embedment depth ration(H/h) up to a maximum value and then remains a constant. The maximum value is called the critical embedment depth ratio which can be distinguished into the type of a vertical anchor plate. From these experiments, the ratio of about 7∼8 was determined. The holding capacity and the breakout factor from the model tests were also compared to the results of the theoretical methods. For a shallow anchor plate, the results of tests are shown a good agreement with those of the theoretical methods. For an anchor plate located at deeper than the critical embedment depth ratio, the values determined from this tests are shown smaller than those of the theoretical methods. It can be concluded that the results of theoretical methods overestimate the experimental those. A nondimensional load-displacement relationship is presented in the forms of a hyperbola and compared with the result of Das & Seeley method. And the new hyperbola constants is proposed.
