Cheon Hai Whan is a Chinese Patent medicine, Which is used for couch remedy in Korea. This medicine consists of 17 powdered crude drugs. The microscopic method is very useful to identify individual gradients in powdery mixture because it requires only a small amount of specimens. In this study, It is demonstrated that the microscopic method is very effective for the identification of 17 crude drug ingredients contained in Cheon Hal Whan.

Korean folk medicine 'Jil-Kyung-Ee' has been used to cure female disease, acute gastritis, edema, abdominal pain and pleurisy. The botanical origin of the crude drug has not been confirmed pharmocognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Jil-Kyung-Ee', the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaves and roots of Plantago species growing in Korea, i.e. P. asiatica L., P. camtschatica Cham., P. depressa Willd., P. lanceolata L., P. major L. var. japonica (Fr. et Sav.) Miyabe were compared. As a result, it was determined that 'Jil-Kyung-Ee' was the whole plant body of Plantago asiatica and Plantago camtschatica.

"O Ga Pi" is one of the Chinese crude drugs used mainly to cure arthritis, acute gastritis and beriberi. With regard to the botanical origin of "O Ga Pi", it has been considered to be Acanthopanax species of Araliaceae, but there has no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. To clarify the botanical origin of "O Ga Pi", the anatomical characteristics of the branch of Acanthopanax species growing wildly in Korea, A. chiisanensis Nakai, A. koreanum Nakai, A. senticosus (Rupr. et Max.) Harms, A senticosus (Rupr. et Max.) Harms var. inermis Harms and A. sessiliflorus (Rupr. et Max.) Seem. were studied. As a result, it was clarified that "O Ga Pi" was the branch, rarely the bark of branch of Acamthopanax sessiliflorus.

The Korean folk medicine Jin Hae Cho Ip has been used as a remedy for neuralgia and as an invigorating drug after a childbirth, etc in Korea. With regard to the botanical origin of Jin Hae Cho Ip, several species of Potentilla (Rosaceae) has been refered, but no pharmacognostical study has yet been performed in this regard. To clarify the botanical origin of the Jin Hae Cho Ip, the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaflets and petioles of Potentilla and Sibbaldia species growing in Korea, such as P. chinensis, P. cryptotaeniae, P. dickinsii, P. discolor, P. fragarioides var. major, P..frevniana, P. kleiniana, P. rnatsumurae, P. paradoxa, and S. procumbens, were compared. As a result, it was found that Jin Hae Cho Ip was composed of the leaves of P. chinensis and P. discolor.
