Vol.32 No.7
An avoidance/guidance problem of an aircraft against moving obstacle is considered in two dimensional space. The aircraft is modelled as a point mass flying with constant speed. The lateral acceleration is assumed the control input. Artificial potential functions are applied to the terminal point and moving obstacles in order that repulsive forces and an attractive force are produced by the obstacles and the terminal point respectively. A real time guidance/avoidance law is proposed by using the potential forces and relative velocity. The guidance law for a logarithm potential function results the well-known proportional navigation law. The avoidance control command is inverse proportional to the time-to-go to the obstacle and turns the aircraft toward the negative direction of the line-of-sight change. The performance of the proposed guidance/avoidance law is verified with simulations.

In order to complete missions in a complicated terrain or highly dangerous area, an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) needs a fine controller to precisely follow the desired path. A PID controller used for the path following feeds forward path curvature information to the control input to improve the path following performance. High gain for PID controller is necessary to follow path tightly. However the high gain could cause instability or performance degradation when the vehicle has slow dynamics. We present PID controller design method which considers response delay of vehicle as well as path curvature. In order to obtain path curvature the desired path is described as a 3rd order polynomial by applying cubic spline interpolation. We apply the proposed controller to the path following of a UAV which is operated in high altitude and has very slow lateral dynamics. The lateral dynamics are modelled as a first order delayed system in the controller design. Nonlinear simulation shows the UAV with proposed controller follows an arbitrary path very tightly.

A sensor fault detection method for small turbo shaft engine considering multiple trim conditions is proposed. This engine is used in a helicopter. Firstly, under multiple trim conditions, we derive the linearized models from a nonlinear model which includes engine, rotor and feedback control loop. As a fault detection method, we adopt the Kalman filter based method. To keep continuity of estimates between the changes of trim conditions, we reconfigure the initial values of state variables at trim changes. We detect the faults with two steps that when the first filter does not alarm the faults for some sensors, the second filter is runned for other sensor. Via some simulations we show that the proposed method works well under multiple trim conditions.

This paper deals with designing a ground-based longitudinal landing controller which is robust to datalink time delays. Time delays occur because forward velocity measurements are downlinked and the controller output commands are uplinked. An H∞, controller was designed by using the input/output decomposition where time delay is modeled as a first-order system with Pade approximation. Linear simulations show that the system tracks well the predefined path and is robust to the variation of time delay.
