19세기 영국 복음주의자 F. R. 하버갈의 찬송시 연구

19세기 영국 복음주의를 대표하는 여류 찬송 작가 중 한 명인 프란시스 리들리 하버갈(Francis Ridley Havergal, 1836–1879)의 찬송시는 한국의 『통일 찬송가』와 『새찬송가』를 통틀어 8편이나 실려 있을 만큼 많은 부분을 차지하고 있다. 이 연구는 한국 찬송가에 실린 하버갈의 찬송시의 신학적 모티프의 분석을 통한 빅토리아 시대의 영국 복음주의 찬송시의 특징과 하버갈의 찬송시의 신학적, 문학적 가치와 업적에 대한 고찰이다. 영국 저교회(Low Church)의 전통에서 성장한 하버갈의 찬송시에서 발견되는 주요 신학적 모티프는 존재론적 위기에 빠진 인간의 구원을 위한 필연적인 예수의 대속적 희생이라는 기독론 속에서의 복음 강조, 성경에 입각한 경험적 신앙고백, 그리고 개인의 성화(sanctification)와 타인을 향한 봉사라는 실천적 가르침을 포함한다. 이 모든 요소들이 18세기 존 웨슬리( John Wesley, 1703–1791)의 영적 부흥운동으로 시작하여 이어진 19세기 영국 복음주의 운동의 특징을 반영하고 있다. 1인칭 단수 대명사를 사용하여 기도문 형식을 취하는 하버갈의 문학적인 양식도 기도 생활을 강조한 당시 영국 복음주의 운동의 모토를 나타내는 데 기여한다. 아울러, 여성 작가로서의 하버갈의 신앙관과 감성은 그리스도에 대한 전적인 의지, 그리고 헌신과 복종을 고백하며 다짐하는 모습으로 비친다. 일생동안 헌신과 성결의 삶을 몸소 실천하며 참 그리스도인의 모습을 보여준 하버갈과 그 모습을 그대로 투영하며 성경을 토대로 하여 신학적, 문학적 가치를 담아 그녀만의 독창적인 찬송가의 영역을 구축한 하버갈의 찬송시는 앞으로도 한국의 공예배(corporate worship)에서 예배 찬송시와 더불어 예배의 기능음악으로서의 역할을 효과적으로 수행하리라 확신한다. Francis Ridley Havergal(1836–1879) is one of the most widely–known woman writers in the 19th–century English Evangelical hymnody. Besides, her hymns have been continuously sung at the Korean worship services until today. This study is about the 19th–century English evangelical hymnody focusing on the theological motifs in Havergal’s hymns found in the Korean hymnals. She was borne to an Anglican pastor’s family and wrote more than 100 hymns, of which eight hymns are included in the Korean hymn books. She spent her entire life as a faithful Christian, serving as a Christian solo singer, Sunday School teacher, evangelist, active supporter of several Christian societies as well as a hymn writer. Moreover, she always cared for the relief of the needy. Therefore, her life is characterized by authentic evangelicalism, total consecration, and altruistic activity, consequently standing as a model for a true Christian, which are clearly reflected in her hymns. The theological motifs found in her hymns are Christ’s redemptive death on the Cross, recognition of the authority of Bible, and confession of the individual experiential faith. Moreover, she emphasizes on personal piety, related to the Keswick Movement, and activism toward others. She prefers to use fist singular pronouns and a written prayer–form, in which the subjective and sentimental voices are prominent. These stylistic traits demonstrate her sensitivity as a woman writer. All of these elements reflect the essence of English evangeli-calism in the Victorian hymnody, through which she built her own field, exerting great influence on many Christians of her day. Not only that, Havergal’s simple and heartful hymns combined with highly spiritual alertness and biblical and theological foundation would continuously find the places in the Korean hymnals, inspiring the Christian way of thinking and living.

윌리엄 쿠퍼(William Cowper, 1731-1800)의 찬송시 연구 II : 『21세기 찬송가』에 실린 “샘물과 같은 보혈은”과 “귀하신 주님 계신 곳”에 나타난 그의 신학관을 중심으로

본 논문은 18세기 영국의 대표 복음주의 찬송 시인인 윌리엄 쿠퍼에 관한 두 번째 연구로서, 『21세기 찬송가』에 실려 있는 두 편의 찬송시인 “샘물과 같은 보혈”과“귀하신 주님 계신 곳”에서 발견되는 쿠퍼의 신학관 및 신앙관에 대하여 다룬다. 이번 연구에서는 선행 연구에서 상세히 다루지 못했던 시인의 굴곡진 삶의 여정을 먼저 살펴보고 이어 『21세기 찬송가』에 실린 그의 두 편의 시에 나타난 신학적인 조명을 통해 우리 예배에서 그의 찬송시 사용에 대한 적합성을 평가하고 그의 찬송시의 가치와 그의 업적을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 공예배에서 부르는 찬송가에 대한 올바른 신학적 통찰력의 중요성에 대해 다시 한번 되새겨 보고자 한다. 영국 국교회 내에서 복음주의자로 활동했던 쿠퍼의 찬송시에서 발견되는 신학적인 주제는 우선적으로, 타락한 인간이 직면한 존재론적 위기에 대한 예수의 십자가상의 대속을 통한 구원이다. 오직 예수의 피 흘리신 십자가 사건만이 인간을 구원하는 유일한 해결책이라는 기독론적 구원론과 이에 따른 복음의 당위성이 쿠퍼의 생생한 묘사를 통해 선명하게 제시되고 있다. 둘째로, 칼빈주의 5대 교리인 은혜의 교리를 기초로 하고 있다. 즉, 전적 부패와 성부 하나님의 무조건적 선택, 성자예수님의 제한적 속죄와 성령 하나님의 불가항적인 은혜 등, 삼위일체 하나님의 거룩한 협의적 사역에 대한 교리가 시인인 쿠퍼의 탁월한 문학적 어법 안에 분명하게드러나 있다. 더불어 그 교리적 가르침 속에는 하나님의 구원 사역을 완성시키는과정에서 택함을 입은 백성들이 마땅히 가져야 할 책무와 강령이 있음을 시인은 지적하고 있다. 포스트모더니즘의 영향으로 교회에서의 교리 교육에 대한 관심이 현저하게 줄어들고 교회음악 안에서 찬송가의 중요성이 점점 더 떨어지는 우리 시대에, 쿠퍼의찬송시와 같은 실질적인 신학적 지침서로서의 기능과 역할을 가지는 올바르게 쓰여진 찬송가의 적극적인 부르기가 회복되기를 간절히 소망한다. 이를 통해 개혁주의 예배 원리의 중요한 부분인 회중들의 활발한 예배 참여에 대한 의지와 열정이다시금 회복되기를 고대한다. This is the second study regarding William Cowper(1731-1800), one of the leading evangelical hymn writers of England in the 18th century, dealing with his two hymns−There is a Fountain Filled with Blood and Jesus, Where’re Thy People Meet−in Korean 21st-Century Hymnal(2006). After providing a biographical sketch of him, this paper focuses on theological insights found in these hymn texts to examine Cowper’s contribution to hymnology as well as the value of his hymns and their suitability in our corporate worship service. The most prominent theological motifs found in these hymns are Christ’s redemptive death on the Cross, total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, and irresistible grace. These are evidently presented through the divine unity of the works of the Trinity. In addition, Cowper points out that some responsibilities and code of conduct toward God’s chosen people are required in the process of completing the salvation process by God. The influence of the Postmodernism has significantly diminished the interest and the importance of catechism in our churches, consequently diminishing the role and function of hymns as a practical theological guide as well. The vital singing of hymns written in biblical and theologically sound bases such as Cowper’s should be regained, so that the active participation of the congregation in our corporate worship, the essential part of reformed tradition, can be restored.

Amazing Grace에 대한 찬송 해석학적 연구

18세기 영국 국교회 복음주의자, 존 뉴턴(1725-1807)이 작시한 “나 같은 죄인 살리신”(Amazing Grace)은 크리스천 노래 중 가장 최고로 많이 알려진 곡 중의 하나이다. 미국 남부의 한 민요 곡조인 NEW BRITAIN과 결합되어 이 찬송가의 파급력은 엄청났지만 뉴턴의 자서전적 이야기를 담고 있다는 것 외에 찬송 가사에 대한 가치와 중요성은 크게 조명을 받지 못해 왔다. 따라서 본 연구는 이 찬송가의 텍스트에 중점을 둔 성경적, 신학적, 문학적 측면에서의 해석학적 고찰이다. 원문이 전체 6절로 구성된 찬송시 Amazing Grace에는 하나님의 사랑과 자비, 선하심에 기인한 탁월한 신적 사역과 그분의 신실하신 약속 안에 이루어지게 될 구원의 완성이라는 하나님의 경륜, 그리고 성도들이 가져야 할 믿음에 대한 근거와 장래의 영광에 대한 기대와 소명이 강조되고 있다. 영국 국교회 내에서 복음주의적 신앙을 가졌던 뉴턴 목사는 이 찬송시에서 칼빈주의 신학인 은혜의 교리를 확고하게 드러내고 있으며 더불어 하나님의 언약과 성취의 관점에서 구약 성경을 신약에 통합시키는 예표론적 접근을 통하여 기독론적 신관을 보여준다. 이를 통해 자신이 섬겼던 올니(Olney) 교회 성도들에게 신앙적 성숙과 종말론적 신앙관을 가지고 이 땅을 살아가도록 권면하고자 하는 설교자 그리고 목회자 뉴턴의 의도를 충분히 드러내고 있다. 이를 위해 찬송 저자는 고급스럽고 세련된 시적 언어보다는 매우 단순하고 명확한 어휘와 친숙한 운율, 그리고 반복되는 음보를 사용하여 성경의 심오한 진리를 올니 교인들의 눈높이에서 분명하게 이해될 수 있도록 세심한 노력을 기울였다. 찬송시 Amazing Grace는 철저히 성경적이며 그리스도 중심적이며, 부르는 모든 이들에게 즉각적이고 실천적인 영적 에너지를 제공하는 운동력이 강한 찬송시이다. 이런 가치와 중요성을 가진 탁월한 찬송을 단순히 현대인의 감정을 위로하는 힐링송으로 전락하게 내버려 두어서는 안 된다. 성도들은 이 찬송시가 담고 있는 귀한 영적, 신앙적 메시지를 분명히 새기며 불러야 하며 아울러 비신자들에게는 효과적인 복음의 도구로 이 찬송이 제대로 사용될 수 있도록 힘써야 할 것이다. Amazing Grace, a hymn written by John Newton (1725-1807) an 18th-century Anglican reverend in England, is one of the most famous Christian songs. The popularity of the song has been enormous since it was combined with NEW BRITAIN, an American folk tune, but the value and importance of the lyrics have not been greatly illuminated. This is a hermeneutic study of the text of the hymn focusing on biblical, theological, and literary aspects. The original lyrics of six stanzas emphasize God’s excellent divine ministry based on His love, mercy, and goodness, the completion of salvation according to His faithful promises, and the expectation for the future glory that believers should have. In particular, Newton, who was on the evangelical side in the Church of England, firmly exposes the Doctrines of Grace, the fundamental teaching of Calvinism, in the hymn. Also, from the perspective of God’s covenant and fulfillment, he speaks of Christology through a typological approach that integrates the Old Testament into the New Testament. At the same time, it fully contains Newton’s intention as a preacher to exhort Olney people to live with religious maturity and eschatological beliefs by presenting a richer and fuller meaning both spiritually and theologically. Amazing Grace is a thoroughly biblical and Christ-centered hymn that provides immediate and powerful spiritual energy to all who sing. A great hymn of such value and importance should not be reduced to simply a song of healing that comforts the emotions of modern people. The believers should clearly engrave and sing the valuable biblical and theological message contained in this hymn, and endeavor to properly use it as an effective tool to spread gospel to unbelievers.
