The aim of this study is to understand Beloved better with the consideration of family and community. It seems to be important for the blacks to get both family and community. Especially, the slave women really wanted to get their own husband, children. Like Sethe, most of the black women did their best to have their children to get freedom under slavery. After all, Sethe chose the worst thing, the murder of a daughter. It was followed by the death of mother-in law, Baby Suggs, and the flight of two sons. We can say her family was broken first by the slavery, and then by Sethe. After that, she was excluded not only by her family, in which were a mother-in law, two sons, and a youngest daughter, but also by the community. But the characters show the possibility of rejoining the new family through the text. Therefore, through the study of family, we can understand the self-recognition of main characters. This study is based on the premise that we need to understand the community of black women to get the correct meaning of Morrison's works. For the slave blacks, it was necessary to make their own community under the slavery. Of course, the people can gain their selfhood and live in relation to others. In this text, the community thus performs the function of the extended 'mother'. In the end of this text, the community reclaim Sethe as a member of that community of mothers and children despite separations, deaths, and violations. Sethe, like Denver, is accepted and remembered into the community of women Beloved is once again run out of 124, this time apparently for good.
