Vol.2013 No.11
In order to predict complex behavior of an engine nozzle, coupling analysis is generally required between fluid and multibody dynamics. In this paper, various components in the nozzle were modeled as flexible multibody components. Then temperature and pressure on the nozzle wall were predicted by the steady-state flow analysis for the two-dimensional nozzle. Steady-state multibody dynamics analysis was then performed by using DYMORE. Deflection induced at the nozzle wall was obtained by the present one-way coupling analysis. Finally the resulting deflections were compared with the static structural analysis results using MSC.NASTRAN.

The wind power energy has been suggested as alternative energy source because it is economically more feasible than other alternative energy technologies. The size of commercial wind turbines has dramatically increased to improve their energy conversion efficiency. The wind turbine blade loads become more important as the wind turbines increase in their size. The modern large-size wind turbine blades generally use sandwich structures and thick laminates to withstand the aerodynamic loads. And the biplane blade design was proposed to use a biplane inboard region to improve overall performance of large blades. The individual pitch control (IPC) facilitates structural load reduction without blade shape alteration. Active flow control methods, such as trailing-edge flap, adaptive compliant wing, micro-tab, have been proposed as viable and effective devices for active load control applications. In order to alleviate the wind turbine blade loads, various researches are under going.

In this paper, various components in the nozzle were modeled as flexible multibody components. Then temperature and pressure on the nozzle wall were predicted by the steady-state CFD flow analysis for the two-dimensional nozzle. Nonlinear multibody dynamic analysis was performed by using DYMORE. For the coupled analysis, the two-dimensional patent nozzle configurations were selected. And, then the one-way and both-way coupled analysis was performed. Heat conduction and thermal analysis were also conducted by MSC.NASTRAN. Finally, total strain results were obtained as a summation of the mechanical and thermal strain components.

Vibratory loads imposed by the rotating blade upon the fuselage has been one of major obstacles in rotorcrafts. A new concept of rotor blade is currently developed to adopt an Active Trailing-edge Flap (ATF) to alleviate such obstacles. The flap is mounted at 65~85% spanwise location from the rotor hub. The nominal rotational speed of the blade is as high as 1,528 RPM, to match the required tip Mach number. Structural integrity is one of the important design aspects to be maintained and monitored in this special type of rotor. This is due to that many detailed components, which drive the flap, are inserted inside the rotating blade. To conduct its structural design and analysis, CAMRAD-Ⅱ and the one-dimensional beam analysis are used. At the same time, three-dimensional finite element analysis are also used, such as MSC. PATRAN/NASTRAN, in order to analyze the details of the present active blade. As a result, comparable characteristics for the present rotor are predicted by both approaches.

Human powered aircraft: the aim is to fly only by human power, features many challenging issues. Contrary to the general aircraft operated by an engine, human powered aircraft, that manoeuvres by lower power, requires additional consideration about weight, material, aerodynamical and structural analysis. Since this aircraft flies at a low speed, low Reynolds number flight will need to be taken into account. In this paper, SNU (Seoul National University) Human Powered Aircraft was designed by comparing it with the existing human power aircrafts, as well as by using theoretical analysis that obtains the design parameters. Also, this paper discuss about the manufacturing process using composite material for real human powered aircraft.

High speed flight vehicle, such as spacecraft and missile, is usually a cylindrical shape and is composed of thin plate skin structures. It installs a high-performance electronic unit sensitive to vibratory loads. Such light-weight structures are usually exposed to external dynamic loads which consist of random vibration, shock, and acoustic loads created from adverse operational environment. Such electronic units need to be designed and qualified considering its robustness. The final objective of this paper is to develop a methodology which helps to establish design specification for the dynamic loads acting both upon the vehicle and electronic units at an arbitrary location inside the vehicle.
Enhancement of SNUF Active Trailing-edge Flap Blade Mechanism Design
Vol.23 No.7
Seoul National University flap(SNUF) blade is a small-scale rotor blade incorporating a small trailing-edge flap control surface driven by piezoelectric actuators at higher harmonics for vibration attenuation. Initially, the blade was designed using two-dimensional cross-section analysis and geometrically exact one-dimensional beam analysis, and its material configuration was finalized. A flap-deflection angle of ${\pm}4^{\circ}$ was established as the criterion for enhanced vibration reduction based on an earlier simulation. The flap-linkage mechanism was designed and static bench tests were conducted for verifying the performance of the flap-actuation mechanism. Different versions of test beds were developed and tested with the designed flap and the selected APA 200M piezoelectric actuators. Through significant improvements, a maximum deflection of ${\pm}3.7^{\circ}$ was achieved. High-frequency experiments were conducted for evaluating the performance, and the transfer function of the test bed was determined experimentally. With the static tests almost complete, the rotor power required for testing the blade in a whirl tower (centrifugal environment) was calculated, and further preparations are underway.
