지식정보화사회에서 문제해결능력은 중요한 기초 능력 중의 하나이므로 효과적인 문제해결학습 방법이 필요하다. 온라인 RPG는 뛰어난 상호작용성과 재미, 커뮤니티 형성을 통하여 플레이어를 몰입하게 하는데 RPG의 게임 과정은 문제해결학습의 전략과 유사하다. 온라인 RPG와 문제해결학습과의 관계를 게임적인 요소에 비추어 살펴보면, 온라인 RPG와 문제해결학습은 흥미를 통한 동기 유발, 선택과 판단, 지적 능력, 문제해결, 자발적 참여, 목표 달성, 스토리 참여, 경쟁과 협력, 상호 작용 등에서 상호 관련성을 갖는다. 이러한 유사성을 근거로 RPG에서의 활동이 학습에도 전이된다면 학습의 효과는 더욱 커질 수 있을 것이라 생각한다. 이런 점들에 착안하여 본 연구는 문제해결학습과 온라인 RPG에 대하여 고찰한 뒤, 온라인 RPG와 문제해결학습의 상호 관련성을 추출하고, 문제해결학습을 위한 온라인 RPG의 설계 방안을 탐색하였다. In the knowledge-based Information Age, problem-solving ability is part of the fundamental competence that everybody must acquire, and students should learn how to solve the given problems. Online RPG, or online role playing games, are highly interactive and entertaining, and such advantages have players absorbed in online RPG. The process of online RPG is similar to that of problem-solving learning, and if the similarity between the two contributes to having learners engagement themselves in studies as if they play online RPG, learning effectiveness will be grater. As for the relationship of online RPG to problem-solving learning, the two factors had something in common in terms of motivating, selecting, judging, need for intellectual skills, problem solving, spontaneous involvement, target attaining, creating a story, competing, cooperating and interacting. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to discuss problem-solving learning and online RPG, interrelationship between the two, and how online RPG should be designed to improve problem-solving learning.
