On the basis of the fact which Dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) penetrate tissue rapidly and reduce the size of ice crystals, a test was done to know whether DMSO can be used in the process of frozen sections. Small blocks of liver, Kidney, lung and spleen tissues were dissected form rats and were divided each into four portions. One block of each tissue was placed for 20 to 25 minutes in each of the following solutions : normal saline(NS), 5%(V/V) DMSO in NS, 10% DMSO in NS, and 20% DMSO in NS. Frozen sections were done on these tissues, and then hematoxylin-eosin stain was done and compared. Generally there was less tissue disruption in the samples treated with DMSO than without DMSO. Especially, in all the tissues, the 10% DMSO gave the best results in staining, cutting and the thickness of the tissue sections. Tissue treated with 20% DMSO was very hard to cut and could not be cut as thinly as the 5% or 10% DMSO treated tissue. Especially in the liver tissue, shrinkage of tissue sections was occured. The kidney tissues treated with 5% DMSO and 10% DMSO were comparable in reducing tissue disruption. The DMSO does not interfere with formalin fixation after frozen sections in the process of routine preparation. The time of penetration of the DMSO into the tissue block was very fast and penetration was apparently completed by ten minutes. If the time of treatment with DMSO was longer, it stained darkerly with hematoxylin-eosin. All of these findings suggest that treatment with 10%(V/V) DMSO for frozen sections enhances the quality of the frozen sections. If possible, this method should be used for human pathologic specimens through the examination on applying DMSO to human tissues.

1069 questionnaires were mailed and 904 were returned, and the results are as follows : The 77.8% of the students were women, and the mean age was 19.2 years. The 84.2% of the students were graduated from general high schools. The 743(82.2%) of respondents admissioned to their colleges right after graduation, but the 75(8.3%), 53(5.9%), and 33(3.6%) admissioned to their colleges after taking rests, after having jobs, and transferred respectively. The total group surveyed ranked the item "College catalog" as their primary source for learning about medical technology and job availability was the unanimous first choice when students ranked factors influencing selection of a major. Students of all groups recommended college staffs′ visiting high schools as the most effective technique for recruiting students. The jobs which recruiting students want to get after their graduation were hospital(25.5%), research institute(13.8%), health center(13.5%), staff members engaged in health affairs except health center(11.9%) and pharmocentical company(8.9%) in order. The factors designated as important to students in their choice of medical technology for a major have important implications for future recruitment efforts.

Recently after reform allowed for the opening of China, the interest in Yanbian Korean- Chinese arising because of an increase in number staying in Korea as industrial mapower and the flow of Korean's traveling to China. Even though Yanbian Korean- Chinese share the same culture as Koreans, they have lived in many different environments. As a result we saw a necessity to do pathological research on all Korean- Chinese. We administered tests two times from July 2001 to July 2002 with the participation of a volunteer (NGO) grown with the purpose of producing basic data about Yanbian Korean- Chinese who dwell in Yanbian city. Yanbian is a state administration site among the Yanbian Korean- Chinese in an autonomous district which is located in the Chinese northeast. We performed tests and reported all of the results on the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs Ag) and antibody (HBs Ab) tests, blood typing analysis (ABO typing), Hematocrit and VDRL test for Yanbian Korean- Chinese. Firstly, the positive rates of Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs Ag) and antibody (HBs Ab) were 4.8% and 8. 2% . In the Cross-analyses according to sex and age of the persons with positive HBs Ag. Secondly, we performed a blood type analysis, both of A type and B type were 28.5%, respectively with type 32.8% and AB type 3% ; O type showed the highest results. Thirdly, the values of Hematocrit were observed in males at 45.21土3.79(%), the females at 40.88士3.39(%). The correlation coefficients according to sex of the values of Hematocrit was significant at the level of 0.01. Fourthly, the positive rate of VDRL test appeared at 0.0%. Hereafter as countries come together in the global village, we should execute continuous research and clinical laboratory tests on overseas Koreans and Koreans who dwell in different environments. Then we have to comparatively analyze these results to use them as basic data for the management of disease and establish normal reference points.

To get some normal reference data on serum creatine phosphokinase(CPK)in Korean Sapsaree, serum samples were collected from 37 normal Sapsaree of variousages and were analyzed for CPK isoenzyme by cellulose acetate electrophoresis and were also determined for total CPK activity. The serum CPK were fractioned into 3 basic fractions(CPK1 CPK2 and CPK3) and the relative activities of these isoenzymes were 33.34±10.78% , 2.46±0.77% and 64.20±14.42% , respectively. Mean value of serum total CPK activity was 451.16± 140.31 IU/L and this value was higher than those of Jindo dog and Beagle dog. This result was considered due to the motility of Sapsaree.

In order to study the genetic variation of Korean native Sapsaree, 36blood samples were analysed for PGI and PGM by electrophoresis. The genetic polymorphisms were observed in PGI-1 and PGM-2. The frequenciesof PGI-lF, PGI-lM and PGI-lS were 0.056, 0.833 and 0.111, respectively. Also, the frequencies of PGM-F and PGM-M were 0.167 and 0.833.

The karyotypes of Sapsaree. Jindo dog and Shepherd dog were analysed by conventional Giemsa staining. C- and G-banding techniques, and were compared with one another. There were no variations in karyotypes which were analysed by conventional Giemsa staining method, but differences were observed in G-banding patterns(Chromosome Nos. 4, 8, 17, 18) and C-banding patterns(Chromosome Nos,4,26) between Canis familiaris strains. It is not clear that these disagreements in C-and G-banding patterns between strains of dog were caused by chromosome polymor-phism or a difference in interpretation.

To identify the pathopysiological characteristics of Korean Sapsaree, bloodcells were analyzed by Technicon H · ITMsystem. The results were as follows. The mean number of WBC, RBC and platelet were 16.05土4.82(103/?l), 6.78± 1.02(105/?l) and 330.14± 71.20(103?l), respectively. Hemoglobin content and hematocrit were 13.20±1.94(g/dl) and 39.89±5.73(%). The number of RBC was increased from birth to 5-year-old and, afterward, was gradually decreased. The values of hemoglobin and hematocrit showed similar tendency to that of RBC. But the value of MCV was decreased from birth to adult. Also, the values of RBC size and WBC count were decreased gradually from birth to adult. The mean percentage of eosinophil was higher than those of another dogs. This result was suggested that allergic diseases and parasites might caused increase of eosinophils.
