Al₂O₃/SiO₂ granules produced by spray drying are highly sensitive to the processing variables during the spray drying process. In order to determine the optimum spray drying conditions for obtaining spherical shape and proper granule size, the Al₂O₃/SiO₂ slurry containing 0.6wt% of PVA and 1.5wt% of Aron was spray-dried at several different spray drying temperatures and atomizing pressures. The effect of the different amount of binder on formation of Al₂O₃/SiO₂ granules was also examined. Experimental results showed that the resultant Al₂O₃/SiO₂ granules was also examined. Experimental results showed that the resultant Al₂O₃/SiO₂granules were not dependent on spray drying temperature within the selected temperature range(150˚C-170˚C). The size of the granules seemed to be inversely proportional to the atomizing pressure applied during the spray drying process. The granules prepared using the slurry containing 0.6wt%of PVA were more spherical than those containing 0.2wt% or 1.0wt% of PVA. The granules spray dried at the atomizing pressure of 80kPa showed the lowest value in porosity.
