<br/> The study of unsteady gas exchange processes in the inlet and exhaust systems of the single-cylinder 4-stroke cycle spark ignition engine is presented in this. paper.<br/> The generalized method of characteristics including friction, heat transfer, change of flow area and entropy gradients was used for solving the equations defining the gas exchange process.<br/> The path line calculation was also conducted to allow for calculation of the gas composition and entropy change along the path lines, and of the variable specific heat due to the change<br/> of temperature and composition.<br/> As the result of the simulation, the properties at each point in the inlet and exhaust pipe, pressure and temperature in the cylinder, and charging efficiency were obtained. Pumping loss and residual gas fraction were also computed.<br/> The effect of engine speed. exhaust and inlet pipe length on the pumping loss and charging efficiency were studied showing that the results were in agreement with what has been known from experiments.
에탄올 사용시의 MPI 가솔린 기관의 성능에 관한 연구

The effect of ethanol-blending on the performances of the MPI gasoline engine was examined. The experiments were carried out for the stoichiometric conditions under MBT spark timing over various operating conditions. The blending rate of ethanol were determined as 10 to 30 percent according to the analysis of the properties of blended fuels. The engine with ethanol-blended fuels showed improved performances such as brake torque, brake power, brake thermal efficiency and exhaust emissions comparing with those of pure gasoline over most operating conditions while the brake specific fuel consumption rate was increased by ethanol-blending due to their lower heating values.<br/>

In this study, the prediction of performances of the gasoline engine - naturally aspirated and turbocharged-of a super-compact car has been accomplished under various operating conditions. The simulation program of the characteristics method was verified by comparison of the experimental values with the predicted ones both for the naturally aspirated engine and the turbocharged engine showing good agreements. Therefore it will be used effectively for the procedures of developing new engines and improving the performances of engines.<br/>
