In this study, an ultrasonic optical fiber hydrogen detector was newly developed to detect the hydrogen leakages. The ultrasonic wave generated from a piezoelectric transducer is guided and propagated through the optical fiber and subsequently sensed by a piezoelectric sensor in the pulse-echo sensor system. For the detection of hydrogen, the fiber was coated with palladium and platinum particles. The coated palladium layer expands on the exposure to hydrogen gas because palladium adsorbs hydrogen gas molecules and swell slightly to from palladium hydride. At this time, the platinum layer causes the chemical and mechanical deformation against the expanded palladium layer. The palladium layer will change the impedance of present in the wave propagation of the optical fiber chemo-mechanical deformed. Output voltage corresponds to the sensed ultrasonic wave can be employed for hydrogen detecting systems.
