Sungseonsa Temple site in Chungju city in Chungcheongbuk-doProvince is written in "Goryeosa" as a building for Queen Sinmyeongsunseong, the mother of Gwangjong in AD 954 in Goryeo Dynasty. The museum in Chungcheong University takes charge of the excavation for 3 times from 2000 to 2002 and identified that its construction was carried out till Joseon Dynasty. Among the iron artifacts from the first excavation such as a weeding hoe, a hand knife, a lock, two nails and a plow which had conservation treatments, the sample was collected. Its micro-structure and method of manufacture were investigated. Excavation report for those artifacts has not published yet, therefore, the date of each artifacts is not clearly confirmed. The samples were collected from each part of the objects and then embedded in epoxy resin and etched with nitric acid. The examination of its microstructure is carried out under the microscope and the hardness values were measured by Vickers hardness tester. From the results, some artifacts show different manufacture method sin the each parts. The forming processes of the iron weeding hoe and the iron sickle are similar but the blade of iron weeding hoe was strengthened by carbonization whereas the blade of the iron sickle was done by quenching. The hand knife and the nails were produced through almost same methods and shows similar microstructures. The hand knife seems to be made by repeated beating and folding in low temperature resulting in fine crystallization, but the nail shows large crystallization due to processes in high temperature. Lock is made of white cast iron, that does not show any heat treatment.

Tumuli located in Chodang-dong in Kangreung City are sitesexcavated by the Museum of Kangreung University in 1993.Ofthese sites, a gilt bronze crown and gilt bronze sword with ring pommel with a tri-leaf ornament were excavated from the B-16tumulus. Underneath the gilt bronze crown was the gilt bronzes word with ring pommel with tri-leaf ornament, and these artifacts were treated with Polyurethane foams on the spot followed by special measures for conservation. This manuscript describes measures for conservation andanalysis with regard to the gilt bronze crown, gilt bronze sword with ring pommel with tri-leaf ornament and gilt bronze beltornaments. Bronze on the gilt bronze crown was completely corroded, therefore it was consolidated together with soil in the back of the artifact with Paraloid B72 after cleaning. Polyurethanefoams bottom was finished by applying the mixture of Epoxy resinAW106 and HV935K with soil. On the sword with ring pommel, the wooden part of the hilt was coated with Paraloid B72 (in Xylene) and the blade was consolidated with Paraloid NAD-10 30% after desalting with Sodium sesquicarbonate method. The gilt bronzebelt ornaments were treated with 3% Benzotriazole, coated with Paraloid B72 and then joined by using Cyanlacrylate. Specimens for the gilt bronze crown and gilt bronze belt ornaments were produced and gilding layers were examined under a metallographic microscope. The gilt bronze crown and the gilt bronze belt ornament maintained relatively good gilding quality with uniform gilding layers. Analysis of wood for the sheath of the sword with ring pommel revealed it to be Juglans mandshurica. Further more, analysis of constituents for a blue colored grassbead from dissolution of Polyurethane foams found it to be from the $Na_2O$-CaO-$AI_2O_3$-$SiO_2$ family.

According to excavation of Imdang site, these sites were excavated place to a various of sites from Early lron period to the Koryo Kingdom. Artifacts to be conserved were excavated from A, D and E district. Metal artifacts were excavated from D and E district and lacquer ware artifacts were excavated from Adistrict. Metal artifacts including lacquer ware iron sword, imitative bronze mirror, Osujen and bronze artifact with letter and so on. Bronze artifacts were covered with soil and rust and performed consolidation after passivation treatment with Benzotriazole solution. Also, iron artifacts performed desalting treatment with 0.1M sesquicarbonate solution. After desalinization, adhesive of these artifacts were processed with Araldite(rapid type) after consolidation with20%∼30% NAD-10 solution. Lacquer ware artifacts remained fragments of lacquer to be all corroded and soiled. Therefore these artifacts retained its original form. Fragments of lacquer joined with Caparol 1%∼3% solution and the soil of relics coated with PSNY 3%∼6% solution. There were many kinds of lacquer were. Lacquer ware artifacts presumed to a string instrument that provide important clues for lacquer ware research. As for lacquer fragments inquire, paints grain size were $2∼5\mum$ and conformed to vanished three times.

Kkonmoe relic located in Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do Provinceis an example of the wide chronology from the Three Kingdoms Period to Joseon Dynasty. Examinations on a forged iron ax, a cast iron ax and an iron sickle excavated from this relic revealed the microstructure structure of the metal and the manufacturing technologies. Microstructure investigation was carried out with a metallurgical microscope and a Vickers hardness tester was used to measure the hardness of the micro structures. The test results show that the forged iron ax has a ferrite and pearlitestructure. It is made of low carbon steel and then carbonized to increase carbon content. After carbonization, the surface grains are reworked and the surface decarbonized. In case of the iron sickle, it is forged from low carbon steel, then carbonized and hardened, to increase overall strength. The sickle blade is carbonized and quenched after forging, resulting in afirm, solid blade. Heat treatment to remove brittleness is not applied to the cast ironartifact, which is manufactured by solidifing hypo-eutectic cast iron with a3-4% carbon content and white cast iron. All artifacts are produced from steel and subjected to a carbonization process. To increase hardness of the blade, additional heat treatment is applied.

According to damage of papers by the chemical cause, papers become to acidify. Among the 3 kinds of method measuring the acidity of paper, one was nondestructive method measuring the surface of the paper by flat type electrode and the others were destructive methods measuring directly by cold water extract method and hot water extract method. In case of the cellulolytic cultural properties, the latter methods were not applied because those methods must bedissociated papers. To measure the paper acidity nondestructively, we investigated the correlation of the nondestructive method and the destructive methods. The conclusions are as follows. 1) In the relationship of the cold water extract method and the hot water extract method, It was indicated that the pH measured by the hot water extract method was high quality printing paper 0.08, rough printing paper 0.13, and Korean paper 0.29 higher than that by the cold water extract method.2) In the relationship of the cold water extract method and the surface measurement method, It showed that the pH value measured by the cold water extract method was high quality printing paper 1.86, rough printing paper 0.80,and Korean paper 0.58 higher than value that by the surface measurement.3) In the relationship of the hot water extract method and the surface measurement method, It showed that the pH value measured by the hot ABSTRACT water extract method was high quality printing paper 1.78, rough printing paper 0.66, and Korean paper 0.29 higher than that by the surface measurement. From the above-mentioned results, the pH value measured by the surface measurement was need to high about 1.78∼1.86 in high quality printing paper, 0.66-0.80 in rough printing paper, and 0.29∼0.58 in Korean paper and the surface measurement with flat type electrode was very available to measure the acidity of Korean papers actually.

In the study of iron artifacts, microstructure investigation is an indispensable step to find out the manufacturing method and skill. The iron weapons that we have excavated and investigated at the ruins of Gohyun Castle site, Hadong-gun, Kyungnam Province are traced to the era of Choson Dynasty. By sampling specimens of some artifacts, we have made microstructure investigation and component analysis of them. For microstructure investigation we used metallographic microscopes, and for component analysis we used the methods of C/S analysis and Inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP) analysis which is designed to verify components and contenets of a very small amount elememt. Microstructure of the artifacts is mainly divided into three parts. Inner part is Widmanstatten, a typical overheated structure, upon which we can see another part with fine grains and with extremely small quantities of carbon. And on the surface, there is a carbonized part. When the shape is formed through forging process at a high temperature the carbon content of the surface is getting down and the grains come to be finer. Next, carbonizing process is to be done for hardening the surface, which is followed by cooling process. Cooling rates seem to be different from artifacts to artifacts. All artifacts have clearly distinguishable grain boundaries in their unique structure. Since this kind of structure is rarely found, it seems to offer a clue to find out the manufacturing method. The outcome of component analysis is almost the same with that of microstructure investigation. As is demonstrated by C/S analysis, carbon content is 0.39-1.24% and sulfur is contained 0.0005-0.010%.

Bokam-ri site was excavated from July 1996 to September 1998 and archaeologically assumed to be grouped with tombs of Mahan period. Among these groups, Tomb No. 3 had built up with stone chamber and found one pair of gilted footware near the jar coffin. This footware was severely corroded and cracked so transfered it gently with soil. Radiography film of this footware showed spike decorations on the bottom and fish-shapped ornament. Gilted footware was consolidated with soil using Paraloid B72 10%~15%solution and cleaned using small tools and microscope. SV427 and HV427 as epoxy resin and Araldite(rapid type) used for joining and restoring. The fore part of gilted footware was connected with nails and folded “L” shape to introduce the bottom material. Tortoise-shell design and flower ornaments appeared on the surface and fish-shaped ornaments, spikes and spangles on the bottom. It was found that 7 spikes and 5 fish-shaped ornaments remained well. Especially, Fish-shaped ornaments were firstly found in the gilted footware and appraised archaeologically important materials.
