The main goal of this work is to investigate the flow patterns flowing around a cylinder on a horizontal flat plane. We also show the result of flow pattern variations flowing a vertical tube for various Reynolds number. By measuring the flow velocity and thickness of the fluid, the flow patterns around a cylinder are observed as almost symmetrical if Reynolds numbers are very small. However, as the Reynolds number is increased, the separation point behind the cylinder is also increased. Furthermore, the Von Karman vortex street behind the cylinder is observed when the Reynolds number is larger than 70. We are able to compare our observations with the reported results in many fluid dynamics textbooks for various flow ranges: Re < 2100, laminar; 2100 < Re < 4000, transition; Re < 4000, turbulent. For the case of a vertical flow, the Reynolds number is much higher than that of a flat plane case (Re < 20 ~ 30) for the laminar flow.
