Mercury (II) ion selective poly(aniline) solid contact electrode based on 1,2-bis(N,N`-benzylthioureido)benzene ionophore as two sulfurs containing sensing material is successfully developed. The electrode exhibits good linear response of 29.8 mV / decade (at 20±0.2℃, r2=0.9954) within the concentration range of 1×10-2.0 ∼1×10(-6.0) M Hg (II). The composition of this electrode was 2BTB 2.5: polyvinylchloride 16.5: 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether 30.5: potassiumtetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate 2.0. The electrode shows good selectivity for mercury (Ⅱ) ion in comparison with alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions. This electrode is suitable for use with aqueous solutions of pH 3.0∼7.0 and their standard deviation in the measured emf differences was ±1.21 mV at mercury nitrate sample solution of 1.0×(10-2) M and 1.0×10(-3) M, respectively. Their stabilization time was less than 72 s. and response time was less than 50 s.
