吳國根 동국대학교 영어영문학과 1990 Dongguk review Vol.- No.18-19
This thesis is the follow-up to my thesis, A Study of College Euglish Textbook in Korea, 1983, Which analized the characteristics and problems of the college English textbooks in Korea. The thesis consists of four parts: Chapter 1 examines the characteristics and problems dealt with in the former thesis and found that they are still there, as few has been solved, and little visible improvement has been made with the textbooks. Chapter 2 proposes that we should abandon the word 'kyoyang' (which means culture or general education and modifies the name of the course college English) since it has no substantial meaning. The word only shows that the course has been taught to the sophomore at the General Education Division. The Division was long abolished in 70s. However, the word still remains to confuse the faculty as well s the students as to the nature of the course. Chapter 3 proposes that the publication of the college Euglish textbooks should be returned to the professional publishers. As the textbooks have been published by the non-professional college, the quality and standard of the textbooks were lowered, not enhanced as expected, benefiting nobody concerned: the faculty, students and colleges. Chapter 4 examines the ways to solve the problems of the textbooks and to improve them. It is proposed that an Institute should be established to control the systematic research of the English(and other language) education. Chapter 5 summarizes the conclusion.
吳國根 동국대학교 1983 論文集 Vol.22 No.-
This thesis aims at the analysis of college English textbooks in Korea comparing them with those being used in the foreign countries. The number of textbooks analysed is 85 in Korea and 25 in 6 foreign countries. It examins the characteristics and problems of textbooks, the most important element at this highest and final stage of the education of English, which has been the most demanding and demanded subject in Korea. The characteristics are: 1. General characteristics; high standard of contents with interdisciplinary trends. 2. Publication of the textbooks by the individual colleges, not by the professional publishers. 3. Proportion of fiction and non-fiction in the content; ever-increasing ratio of non-fiction, 4. Prevalence of American English. The problems are: 1. General problems; the lack of sense of responsibility for the possible technical errors or faults in the textbooks as they are published not by the professional publishers. 2. The absence of preface or introduction in many textbooks. 3. Linited sources for the materials and lack of proper criteria for the selection. 4. Use of an "expedient". 5. Insufficient notes and unclear sources. 6. Problems of non-English authors. 7. Problems of characters 3 and 4 when they are intensified. As a conclusion, the thesis proposes some suggestions for the solutions for the solutions of the problems; Due and proper regard for college English and textbooks on the parts of teachers and authorities concerned; the establishment of a national or pancollege institute for the study of college English, i. e. purpose, textbooks and method; Participation of the professional publishers in the publication for the better textbooks.
