This study was conducted to examine NP2EO and OP2EO which are in the primary and secondary settling tank sludge at the municipal wastewater treatment system(MWTS). This MWTS has two parallel paths of treatments. One is a traditional aerobic biological treatment system, and the other is a advanced treatment system, A2O. The result is that at the traditional system NP2EO was 772.9 μg/kg and OP2EO was 20.0 μg/kg in the primary settling tank sludge, and in the secondary one, NP2EO was 1,570.5 μg/kg and OP2EO was 40.0 μg/kg, respectively. And at the A2O system NP2EO was 49.6 μg/kg and OP2EO was 0.8 μg/kg in the primary settling tank sludge, and in the secondary tank, NP2EO was 272.3 μg/kg and OP2EO was 15.4 μg/kg. For analysis, we used LC-MS-MS to get better separating efficiency, and the ionizing method was ESI(+). Ammonium acetate was supplemented as ionization support material.

The fates of a total of 30 pharmaceutical compounds, which have been frequently administrated, in a local wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) were evaluated. The main process of the WWTP was the conventional activated sludge. Wastewater and sludge samples were collected from each unit process of the plant. The collected samples were extracted and quantitated following the procedure proposed by the National Institute of Environmental Science. The quantitation of residual pharmaceuticals were performed using HPLC-MS-MS. In general, the conventional biological treatment process did not seem to be effective in treating antibacterial compounds. It should be noted that the sampling for the study was performed once. To draw a more concrete conclusion out, more sampling events should be designed to have more data.

Whencollectingairsamplesforanalyzingtheioniccomponentsoffinedust,a(+)errormayoccurbecausegaseousprecursorsreactwitheachotheronthefiltersurfacetoformparticles.ToremoveNO<sub>2</sub>,SO<sub>2</sub>,HNO<sub>3</sub>,HNO<sub>2</sub>,andNH<sub>3</sub>,whichmaycausetheseerrors,adenudermustbeinstalledinfrontofthesamplingport.However,withtheextensiveuseofsequentialsamplersthatautomaticallyreplacesfiltersonceevery24h,theuseofdenudersisdecreasing.Inthisstudy,theeffectofdenuderinstallationwasanalyzedbyoperatingasamplersimultaneouslywithandwithoutadenuderon279samplescollectedfromGwangjin,Seoul.ItwasconfirmedthattheNH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>concentrationofthesamplerequippedwithadenuderwas13.4%~26.9%lessthanthatofthesamplerwithoutthedenuderwhenthefineparticleconcentrationwaslessthan30μg/㎥.Further,lessnitrateandsulfateweredetectedwhenthedenuderwasinstalled.However,theirlevelswerenotaslowasthatofNH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>.Thisislikelybecausenitrateandsulfatearecollectedinaformboundtowatersolubleorganiccarbonparticlesandthenelutedtoaddanionstolowertheionbalance.Inaddition,whenthedenuderwasnotinstalled,theionbalancevaluewashigherthanthatwiththedenuderinstalled,whichwasattributedtothepartialneutralizationofnegativeionsbygaseousammonia.Therefore,todeterminewhetheranerroroccursduringtheexperiment,theionbalanceshouldbecarefullymaintained.
