The effects of fuel injection timing on lean misfire limit has been investigated in a sequential MPI SI engine. To investigate the interaction of injection timing and intake flow characteristics, so called axial stratification phenomena, 4 different swirl inducing intake ports have been tested in single cylinder engine test bench. And 2 kinds of fuel, gasoline and compressed natural gas(CNG), were used to see the effect of liquid fuel vaparization. Result shows that the combination of port swirl ratios and injecton timimg governs the lean misfire limit and lean misfire limit envelopes reamain alomost same for a given swirl ratios regardless of engine speed. It is also found that two phase flow has some effects on lean misfire limit ,i.e. axial stratification.<br/>

Fuel concentration measurements using Rayleigh scattering have been made and fuel stratification was observed at each valve lift corresponding to typical flow regimes. It has been observed that swirl flow has strong influence on the fuel motion inside the cylinder. Fuel remains stratified until it reaches bottom of cylinder and is easily expected to remain as stratified until ignition timing since the air motion becomes ordered during the compression stroke. So the ignition ability, especially for lean burn engine, will be affected by fuel stratification And fuel stratification pattern differs from each other along with valve lift This explains the lean mixture limit varied by changing fuel injection timing.
