        Motivational Principles underlying Linguistic Characteristics of Second Language Writing

        The present study explored how a learner’s motivational foundation driven by regulatory focus and mode is related to the linguistic characteristics of complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) of L2 writing. It was hypothesized that learner’s regulatory focus and mode would lead the learners to focus on certain aspects of the writing processes, thus resulting in individual variations in CAF levels of writing. English argumentative essays written by 48 Korean EFL students were analyzed with reference to writing CAF measures. The participants’ regulatory foci and modes were also measured using two questionnaires. The results of multiple regression analyses showed that the promotion-focus positively predicted complexity and the prevention-focus negatively predicted fluency and accuracy. Regarding regulatory mode, the assessment-mode positively predicted both complexity and accuracy and the locomotion-mode was not significantly related to any measures of CAF. The findings may contribute to understanding individual differences in L2 development through writing and suggest that learners’ inherent motivational characteristics play a role in the L2 writing process. Results are discussed in relation to the writing process models, and pedagogical implications and future research directions are suggested.

        The Interaction of Cognitive Task Complexity and Motivational Orientation in L2 Writing

        Within the active area of task complexity research, a key objective has been to investigate the effects of inherent cognitive demands of tasks on L2 performance and development. The present study investigated the extent to which cognitive writing task complexity influences linguistic performance of writing, and examined how motivational orientation defined by regulatory focus would mediate the effects of task complexity. Sixty-two Korean EFL learners were asked to perform two writing tasks with different levels of complexity. Learners’ regulatory foci were measured, and linguistic performances were assessed in terms of syntactic complexity, lexical complexity, and accuracy. ANOVA results revealed significant main effects of task complexity on all indices of lexical complexity and the two measures of syntactic complexity (T-units per sentence and verb phrases per T-unit). Importantly, there were significant interaction effects between writing task complexity and regulatory focus on syntactic complexity and accuracy. The promotion-focused learners performed better regarding both syntactic and lexical complexity in the complex task than the simple task, while the prevention-focused learners showed decreased accuracy and syntactic complexity with increasing lexical complexity. The findings provide important insights into factors mediating the effect of task complexity on linguistic performance, suggesting that the consideration of regulatory focus is crucial to ensure the effectiveness of L2 writing tasks.

        The GO-TO Strategies를 활용한 초등 예비교사의 영어 융합 수업 개발 능력 증진 방안

        본 연구는 최근 주목받고 있는 융합 인재 교육(STEAM)과 관련하여 초등 예비교사의 영어 융합 수 업 개발 능력을 함양하는 방안에 대한 것으로 미국 공립대학에서 ESOL 교사들이 개발한 The Go To strategies(TGTS, Levine et al. 2013)를 활용하여 초등영어 융합 수업지도안을 개발하는 실험 수업 을 실시하였다. 연구에 참여한 24명의 예비교사는 주어진 실험 절차에 따라 10주간 1)TGTS 핵심내 용의 습득, 2) 교과 내용/언어의 체계적 분석, 3) 융합 수업 실험 지도안 작성 등을 수행하였다. 예비교 사들이 개발한 융합 수업지도안은 TGTS 활용 전과 후로 나누어 세 가지 측면(융합 교과의 목표 달성, 융합 학습 활동, 융합 활동 구성)에서 분석하였다. 분석 결과 실험 수업 후 세 측면에서 모두 주목할 만 한 개선을 보였고, 특히 융합 학습 활동 면에서 평가한 두 지도안의 점수의 차이는 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 또한, 융합 수업지도안 작성 실험 후 얻어진 설문지를 분석한 결과 융합 수업지도안 개발과정에 TGTS의 활용 효과에 대하여 예비교사들은 매우 긍정적으로 평가하였다. 결과분석을 토 대로 본 연구의 시사점과 함께 예비교사들의 영어 융합 수업 능력 증진에 대한 향후 연구의 방향을 제 언하였다. Researchers and language educators have recently paid attention to convergence education (STEAM). The current study was conducted to foster the pre-service teacher’s ability of converged teaching, in particular, of English and other subjects. ‘The Go-To strategies (Levine et al. 2013)’ was employed as a tool for designing converged lesson plans, originally developed by the ESOL teachers at the US public schools. For 10 weeks, 24 pre-teachers who participated in the study 1) learned key content of TGTS, 2) systematically analyzed the subject contents/language objectives, and 3) designed a converged instructional plan including class materials. The lesson plans developed by pre-service teachers were analyzed in three aspects (curriculum goal achievement of converged education and the theme and design of converged learning activities). The results revealed that all three aspects were improved, and it was confirmed that, in particular, teachers were able to design plenty of learning activities and themes effective in convergence of English and contents. Further, the results of the survey questionnaires obtained after the practice, showed that it was positively perceived among the pre-service teachers to incorporate TGTS in developing converged instructional plans.

        공공도서관 청소년 프로그램의 유형별 특성과 발전 방안 연구

        The purpose of this study is to seek the solutions for development of young adults programs in the public libraries in Korea. The reasons for the problems and limitations of the young adults programs are the absence of personnel in charge of young adult service, the shortage in book stock and space, the low participation due to the educational environment pursuing only entrance examination, the poor system in public relations and the cooperation with young adult related organization etc. As the result of seeking solutions for the development of young adults programs in the public libraries based on these problems, followings are required: the establishment of young adults service system, placement of personnel in charge, the development of integrated young adult programs, strengthening of education for librarians in charge, and the establishment of young adult service network. 이 연구는 공공도서관 청소년 프로그램의 현황을 조사하여 문제점을 분석하고 개선 과제를 탐색하였다. 1개 특별시와 6개 광역시의 공공도서관 중 2009년 8월 31부터 9월 4일까지 청소년 프로그램이 실시된 86개관을 대상으로 조사하였다. 이 연구에서는 청소년프로그램을 참여형, 체험형, 강좌형, 콘테스트형, 기관협력형 등 5가지 유형으로 구분하여 각 유형별 특성과 문제점을 분석하였다. 그리고 공공도서관의 청소년 프로그램의 활성화를 저해하는 제반 환경적 문제를 점검하고 발전 방안을 제안하였다.

        초등 예비교사의 규제 초점(Regulatory Focus) 성향과 영어 말하기 능력의 연관성 분석

        The present study aimed to explore how pre-service teacher’s individual regulatory focus orientation, currently emerging as an interesting learner variable for language learning, could influence their Englishspeaking abilities. English teaching demonstration videos of 67 pre-service teachers were analyzed in terms of pronunciation, accuracy, and fluency. The regulatory focus orientations of participants were evaluated using a questionnaire. The results of data analysis, using multiple regression analysis, indicated that promotion-focus orientation was a significant positive predictor for pronunciation, fluency (words per minute, ratio of dysfluency), and accuracy (lexical errors, ratio of error-free AS-units). On the other hand, prevention-focus orientation did not emerge as a statistically significant factor affecting accuracy. However, it was observed to have a negative influence on both pronunciation and fluency. In light of the research findings that highlight the favorable impact of a promotion-focus orientation, suggestions were made for future teacher training programs aimed at enhancing the English proficiency of pre-service teachers.

      • iPhone 을 활용한 UI Paper Prototyping 지원 툴 개발

        페이퍼 프로토타이핑(Paper prototyping)은 인터페이스를 종이에 빠르게 스케치하여 컴퓨터 역할을 맡은 사람에 의해 인터액션을 모사함으로써 사용자가 실제 인터페이스를 가지고 태스크를 수행하는 과정의 문제점을 개발 초기에 반복적으로 발견하고 개선하는 방법이다. 그러나 페이퍼 프로토타이핑은 사용자 조작에 대한 인터액션의 지연이 필연적으로 발생하며 물리적인 디지털 디바이스와 그 경험이 일체화되지 못한다는 한계를 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 그러한 한계를 극복하기 위해 페이퍼 프로토타입을 빠르고 쉽게 아이폰으로 디지털화하여 인터렉티브한 프로토타입을 만들 수 있도록 도와주는 DigiPro(Digital Paper Prototyping)란 지원 툴을 개발하였다. 마트 어플리케이션을 디자인하는 작업에 대해 DigiPro 의 유용성을 검증한 결과, 페이퍼 프로토타입으로 테스트하는 것보다 소요 시간이 짧았으며 사용성에 대한 평가 결과는 더 좋은 점수를 보였다. Paper prototyping (PP) is an efficient method to investigate usability problems in user interfaces on initial design stages. UI designers sketch user interfaces rapidly and find the problems by which human operators simulate their interaction. However, PP has some limitations. First, the interaction on users' operation is necessarily delayed because it is manipulated by the human. Second, the interaction experience cannot be integrated with a physical device. In this study, in order to overcome such limitations, an aid named DigiPro (Digital Paper Prototyping) was developed based on iPhone. The validation results on DigiPro showed that it took less test time and had higher SUS (System Usability Scale) point, as being compared to the usability test with PP.
