Background: Hanji is paper made from traditional Korean style. It is known to have an intrinsic beauty. There is a need to expand the limited use of Hanji beyond windows and doors to a material for furnitures, and thereby showcase the beaty of Korea. Methods: The characteristics of Hanji and design cases utilizing it are investigated through a literature review. The applicability of Hanji as a furniture material is evaluated through design study and protype models. Result: Hanji is visually beautiful and at the same time has favorable properties. It has a high durability, tension strength, and hygroscopicity. The original color and texture has oriental characteristics, but depending on how it is used, also matches well with modern design. Conclusion: In this study, the applicability of Hanji as a furniture material is evaluated through design study and prototype models. The design study models demonstrate that Hanji matches favorably with the modern chair design. Furthermore, two stool prototypes are designed. To highlight Hanji and stool design, the structure is built using turned metal and turned leg design is used. Several layers of Hanji with different sizes are overlapped to highlight irregularities. Even in a design where heterogeneity is intentionally emphasized, Hanji retains a unique design and goes well with Western design. It is revealed to have a high applicability as a furniture material. 연구배경: 한지는 한국 고유의 방식으로 제작되는 종이로서 내재된 아름다움을 가지고 있는 재료이다. 한옥의 창호로 사용되는 한지의 사용 범위를 확대하기 위하여 가구 재료로서의 적용성을 규명하여 한국의 미를 세계에 알릴 필요가 있다. 연구방법: 한지의 특성과 디자인 사례는 문헌조사를 통하여 규명하였다. 한지의 가구 재료로서의 적용성은 디자인 스터디 모델과 디자인 프로토타입 모델을 통하여 평가하였다. 연구결과: 한지는 시각적으로 아름다우며 동시에 기능적으로도 우수한 성능을 보유하고 있다. 특히 질긴 특성을 가지고 있으며 우수하며 인장강도가 크고 흡습성이 우수한 재료로 조사되었다. 한지의 고유한 색감과 텍스쳐는 동양적이지만 활용 방법에 따라 현대적인 디자인과도 잘 어우러지는 것으로 나타났다. 결론: 본 연구에서는 가구 재료로서 한지의 적용성을 평가한 디자인 스터디와 프로토타입 제품을 통하여 평가하였다. 디자인 스터디 결과, 한지는 현대적으로 디자인된 의자와의 조화가 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 나아가, 높이와 넓이가 다른 두 가지 스툴 프로토타입 모델을 디자인하였다. 한지와 대비를 강조하기 위하여 스툴은 선반세공 방식으로 제작된 메탈로 제작하였으며 크기가 다르게 절단된 한지를 겹겹이 포개서 불규칙성을 강조하였다. 의도적으로 이질성을 부각한 작품에서도 한지는 독창적인 느낌을 간직하고 있으며 동시에 서양 디자인 양식과도 잘 어우러지며 가구 재료로서 높은 활용도를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
