Doosan Infracore has developed three kinds of EURO-4 heavy duty commercial vehicle diesel engines on its own. The main development targets were low emissions, excellent fuel economy, high performance and longer endurance reliability. For fulfilling these targets, Selective Catalytic Reduction(SCR) system, high-pressure common rail injection system with 4 valves, high strength structured cylinder block and cylinder head and new materials for piston and bearing were adopted. During the design stage, CAE technology played very important role through detail analysis and optimization. After the design stage, durability evaluation for each part confirmed the results again through part reliability test.

Flexible multi body dynamics model was used to calculate reactions and dynamic stresses on a cranktrain which are difficult to measure during early stage of development. Rigid model for V12 engine cranktrain with components connected by kinematic constraints was transformed into a flexible model by replacing rigid crankshaft and connecting rods with flexible ones. To secure the credibility of flexible body model, three kinds of flexible model were tried, ie, a model with a whole length of crankshaft, with a segment (1/6 of the whole) of crankshaft, and a segment model with finer meshes. The results from each model were compared, and a segment model with finer meshes was found to give reasonable stress values within relatively short period of computing time. More realistic dynamic displacement and dynamic stress were calculated to help better prediction of endurance, safety and vibration in an early stage of development.
