      • “不可殺伊” 이야기에 나타난 高麗 滅亡의 象徵性 硏究

        손정희(Son Jeong-Heui) 경성대학교 인문과학연구소 2003 인문학논총 Vol.8 No.-

The 'Bulgasalie' myth is not a true story, but fiction made up by the general public at the time. 'Bulgasalie', which devoured all metals inside the country of Koryo and disappeared with the start of the Chosun Dynasty, symbolizes the perishment of Koryo. From the viewpoint of Koryo's history, the people of Koryo had to experience the longest period of miserable wars in Korean history, and accordingly hated wars the most. Wars had caused not only economic poverty, but also demoralization of the Koryo people. Therefore, the people's extreme hatred of wars helped to create 'Bulgasalie' in their imagination, eating all metals that could turn into war weapons. Buddism during the late Koryo dynasty, was not the means of salvation, but rather made fun of by people due to the corruption of its monks. This is probably the reason why so many monks are involved in the old fables about 'Bulgasalie'. Based on this, it is not hard to see how much the story writers hated Buddhist monks. The unchanging key element in the old novels is that 'Bulgasalie' are always created or destroyed either during the late Koryo or the early Chosun period. Therefore, we can see that the 'Bulgasalie' myth is closely related to the end of Koryo or start of the Chosun dynasty. In summary, 'Bulgasalie' ate all metals of Koryo and transformed itself into fire to destroy the Koryo empire, symbolizing the end of the Koryo dynasty.
