The Three-storied stone stupa in Seollimwonji Temple site is supposed to had been built after 873 A.D. by the zen master Honggak who reconstructed the Seollimwon temple. The Seollimwon temple was where the zen master Yeomgeo stayed, who is the successor of the first zen master Doeui of the Jinjeonsa Temple which is the first zen temple. The surroundings of the two temple sites is very similar, and also similar of the styles of the two stupas. So we can suppose that the style of the stupa in Seollimwon Temple site succeeded to that of the stupa in Jinjeonsa Temple site and the Seollimwon followed the tradition of the Jinjeonsa Temple. After the stop of the succession of the zen tradition of the Jinjeonsa Temple, perhaps the peoples in this province wanted the zen master Honggak come to their country and reopen the Sollimwon Temple. The Three-storied stone stupa in Jinjeonsa Temple site is supposed to had been built in first half of the 9th century when the zen masters Doeui and Yomgeo were active in Seorak province. The high skillful reliefs of 4 Buddhas and many others in the two storied bases must be the masterpieces of the best sculptor in the Silla dynasty. So we suppose that the power of Jinjeonsa Temple was also high in that time. But it would be a bit burdensome in construction the stupa of the Seollimwon Temple because of whole reconstruction of the temple buildings. So the style of the stupa came to mannerism and also being downed the mind to construction good stupas at that time. Therefore except 8 gods on second base all reliefs were omitted and the skill of the sculpture went down. We can recognize that the stone stupa of Seollimwon Temple site followed the first style of the 8 god relief stone stupa started on the three storied ston stupa of Changrimsa Temple and by way of the stupa of the Jinjeonsa Temple and also understand the stupa of Seollimwon Temple motivated to making good stone masterpieces, stone lantern, stone monk stupa, stone monument in the Seollimwon Temple. And It is very important that the stupa of Seollimwon had a role of handing down the tradition of the style of 8 god relief stone stupa, along the rout of East Coast to the stupa of Singyesa Temple in Geumgangsan Mountain in northern province.
