The skin resistance of piles in cohesive soils is influenced by many factors related to the properties of both soils and piles such as, shearing strength of soils, stratification of soil, stress history, pile diameter, quality of materials, pile-setting method, etc. However, it is very difficult to consider all the above factors in calculating the skin resistance. therefore, only several important factors have been considered. Three methods, so called α-method, β-method, have been used to calculate the skin resistance of piles in cohesive soils. They are empirical methods which have been proposed by relation empirically the skin resistance of piles with the undrained shear strength or/and the effective vertical stress of soils. In this study, reliability of the methods was investigated by using the obserbed values obtained from several referneces. It was found that the α-method could not predicted so well the skin resistance of piles in cohesive soils. The α-method was modified based on the observed values. By distingushing the soils into two groups of normally consolidated soils and overconsolidated soils, the reliability of the α-method and the β-method could be improved. Finally more reliable method, which considered both the undrained shear strength and the effective vertical stress, was proposed to estimate the skin resistance of piles in cohesive soils. The new proposed method was more reliable than the λ-method.
