Vol.27 No.4

This study aims to understand the circumstances of the association between social activities of elders and the neighborhood environment. Qualitative approach was used instead of quantitative one that focus on limited specific variables. Elders were interviewed in a conversational manner for social activities and place in urban residential neighborhood of Seoul. Open coding from grounded theory was used to analyze the interview data. Six themes were emerged: close neighbors nearby home, running a store with longtime neighbors, getting together in pleasant parks, being alone in public parks, gatherings in small in-between space, shrinking social ground. Elders were found that they have strong bond with other neighbors getting together everyday. In fact, they tended to help each other for everyday needs and have stronger social connection in streets around housing units than public parks. Women of longtime residents in their 70s or 80s had close social connections around neighborhood who would have taken care of everyday things in homes. Future studies should address social activies of men and other locations such as community center, cultural facility, library.

Vol.20 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the role of the physical environment in task in-terruptions in the healthcare settings. Many dangerous events such as airplane crash and medical errors are the result of human errors and, these errors are often the result of interruptions during a critical task of professional workers. In fact, the physical environment that determines accessibility and visibility among people affects interruptions significantly, but architectural studies have given little attention to the management of interruptions. Methods: Therefore, the researcher reviewed research literature in other fields to find out how the physical environment affected interruptions. Many studies were from management, human factors, and health care, but few from architecture. First the author examined the impact of interruptions, second described the social context of inter-ruptions and the role of the physical environment. Results: Findings included that description of the physical environment was not very clear in studies from management and human factors, while little work had been done on interruptions in architecture. The author proposed study design that com-pensated shortcomings of each field by combining approaches from management, human factors, and architecture. Implications: Unit design strategies such as distribyted nurse stations can affect interruptions and layout analysis such as space syntax analysis can evaluate visibility and accessi-bility of floor plans in the preliminary design phase.

Vol.20 No.4

Vol.38 No.1

Elderly community care is directly affected by a neighborhood’s design. The impact is noticeable in social activities and community interactions that take place within a housing environment. Rather than relying solely on costly nursing homes or elderly assisted living facilities, alternatives are needed to better accommodate the rapidly aging population. Urban development projects are beneficial to some residents, but other community members especially the elderly end up being involuntarily displaced; this results in a dismantling of the social structure within a local community. These high-rise developments have distanced the elderly, both horizontally and vertically, from community areas where relational connections are lost, feeling a sense of ownership is nonexistent and awkward social encounters with unfamiliar faces is abundant. Therefore, gated communities of high-rise apartments need significant modifications to better support the elderly in transitioning and experiencing a shared space with inclusive social activities for a more sustainable urban housing environment. Supporting social activities through housing design for community and community care was discussed.

Vol.27 No.1

Elders tend to spend their daily life close to their home due to weakening physical ability. Therefore, it is crucial for them what is available near home for their quality of life. Among other places, space in front of housing unit can play a key role in everyday life of elders. They can see and talk with other neighbors there and it is the easiest place where they can go outside. The condition of the space in front of house can affect how much elders can go outside and involve in social activities. Therefore, this study compared high-rise apartment and low-rise housing in terms of elders’ social activities. These two type of housing had very different physical structure of housing unit front space. Researchers interviewed 50 elders in total in 26 locations. Exploratory in nature, conversational interview was conductive with minimum questions in the beginning in order to understand the circumstances of elders’ social activities. As a result, elders in the low-rise housing area had more social activities on average than those of high-rise apartments. Researchers assume, visual, auditory, and physical accessibility between private housing unit and housing unit front (street) space contributed to the difference of social activities. Elders in the low-rise housing had an advantage of better accessibility to the front space and the neighbors from each housing unit. However, the space there could be easily taken by car traffic. On the other hand, common space in high-rise apartment was secured with seating arrangement and landscape protected from car traffic. In the future, positive features from both housing types should be adopted for new housing design.

Vol.27 No.11

In an effort to be patient and family-centered, hospitals have provided family zone within patient rooms. However, few studies have examined or verified effectiveness of having family area within patient rooms for family presence and their interaction with care givers. This study examines the effectiveness by conducting comparative observations between patient rooms that have family zone and does not. Observers recorded family presence and their interaction with caregivers every 30minutes from 7am to 7pm per day for three days for each type of patient rooms. Results show that family members were more present and interacted more with caregivers in patient rooms that had designated family zone while many family members were found in waiting area in the unit that had patient rooms without designated family zone. Based on the observations, the study concludes that providing designated family zone in patient rooms can increase family member’s presence and their interaction with caregivers.
