탐방로 등급제는 탐방로의 특징에 대하여 사람들에게 알리는 중요한 수단이며, 여가활동으로 탐방을 장려하는데 활용된다. 표준화된"어려움의 정도"혹은 탐방로 등급을 제공함으로써, 탐방객들은 그 탐방로가 그들에게 적절한지를 알 수 있다. 탐방로 등급평가는 초보 탐방객, 특히 장애인이나 아이들과 함께 걷는 사람들을 안심시킬 것이며, 특정 탐방로는 그들에게 적절할 것이다. 그것은 탐방경험이 거의 없는 사람들이 적절한 탐방코스를 선택하도록 하며 그들이 의도하지 않게 잘 모르는 어려운 탐방로를 선택하지 않도록 할 것이다. 본 연구에서는, 다른 나라에서 현재 사용되고 있는 탐방로 등급 시스템을 확인한다. 이 연구를 위해서 사용된 방법은 호주, 아일랜드, 뉴질랜드, 그리고 미국에서의 탐방로 등급제와 관련된 문헌조사, 현장자료조사를 바탕으로 조사하였다. Trail grading systems serve various functions. They inform people about the features of walking to determine trail suitability as well as assisting in the marketing and promotion of walking as a leisure activity. By providing a standardized 'level of difficulty' in trail grading users are able to gauge whether a particular trail provides an appropriate level of difficulty for them. The standardized trail grading system would reassure entry level walkers, particularly the disabled or people walking with children, that a particular trail was suitable for them. It would also assist people with little or no trekking experience to make informed choices to prevent inadvertent or ill-informed use of more difficult trails. The methods used to complete this research included literature reviews and collection of brochures from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and U. S. A.
