Removal of Sparingly Soluble Organic Compounds from Aqueous Solution by Surfactant Micelles
Vol.1 No.1
Sparingly soluble organic compounds (SSOCs) were partitioned into surfactant micelles which form when surfactant concentration exceeded their critical micelle concentration (CMC). SSOC partitioning into micelles increased with decreasing SSOC solubility and with increasing micelle concentration. Electrolyte addition to ionic surfactant solutions reduced their CMC values and increased the aggregation number resulting in enhanced removal of SSOCs. Sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDDS), which has a branched benzene ring in its surfactant tail, did not show preferential sorption of aromatic compounds over sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and in fact sorbed lower amounts of SSOCs than did SDS. This decreased sorption is presumably due to geometric and packing constraints, which limit the ability of the micellar core to accommodate the added bulk of the solubilized molecules. SSOC partitioning into the micelles of cationic surfactants, dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DDTMA), tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TDTMA), and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMA) increased with increasing number of carbon atoms in surfactant tail. However, when the amount of SSOC sorbed was normalized by carbon number, the tail length was found to have little effect on SSOC removal.
