Golf has become an increasingly popular sport worldwide. Although often perceived as a leisurely activity, golf can be a demanding sport, which can result in injury, usually from variety of reasons. While the majority of injuries in golf are attributable to overuse, acute traumatic injuries can also occur. As the body is directly linked to the golf club, the upper extremities are especially prone to injury. This article focuses on the upper extremity injuries in golf, including a discussion of the epidemiology, cause, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of injuries occurring in shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand.

The purpose of this study was to determine the early effect of static and PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching on back flexibility in professional golfers of KPGA (Korea Professional Golfer Association). 44 professional golfers were randomly divided into two groups. GroupⅠ(n=23) performed a static stretching and groupⅡ(n=21) performed a PNF stretching. Back flexibility was measured immediately before and after application or rest by SR(sit-and-reach) test. Back flexibility significantly increased in both groups (p<0.05) but, more significantly increased in groupⅡ (p<0.05). The results of this study indicated that static and PNF stretching on back immediately increased back flexibility and more significantly in group with PNF.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to know sports injury aspects and relationship between exercise stress, tension, exercise habits and sports injuries. Methods : We surveyed 42 professional golf players who attended Korea Tour during the second half of the year 2010 and have sports injuries with self - assessment questionnaires. Results : According to the types, they had myalgia, tendonitis, ligament sprain in the order. According to the body parts, they had injuries in right thoracic, left cervical, left shoulder region in the order. As a result of the analysis of the sports injury frequency according to the exercise stress and tension, there were no significant differences between the high and low level group. But result of injury regions showed high tension level group showed more damages in right thoracic region (p<0.05). Exercise habits appear subjects had lots of training time, however, they used to skip the muscular strengthening exercise during the on season, but had no significant difference between sports injury frequencies and exercise habit. Conclusion : For the improvement of the athletic performance and prevention of the sports injury, warming-up, cooling-down and muscular strengthening exercise program developments are needed.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of quadriceps exercise for improvement of knee extensor muscular function after cruciate ligament reconstruction. Methods: Participate in 18 of patients with cruciate ligament reconstruction, ACL & PCL reconstruction was 9 of patients, respectively. All subjects instructed that quadriceps exercise repeated daily, composed to QSE(quadriceps femoris setting exercise) and SLR(straight leg raises). Knee extensor muscular function was measured before and after quadriceps exercise. Initial test was measured before cruciate ligament reconstruction, and retest was measured 6month after cruciate ligament reconstruction. Results: Knee extensor muscular function significantly increased in both ACL and PCL reconstruction(P<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that quadriceps exercise useful for improve knee extensor muscular function in patients with cruciate ligament reconstruction.

We conducted a survey of 184 female caddies working in the Seoul area concerning their general characteristics in a season and painful body sites. Their work-related stress factors were classified into 8 categories. 91 persons had leg pain which was related to age, carrier and the physical working environment as a job stress factor. 76 persons had shoulder pain which was related to the body mass index, job burden and past injuries. 50 persons had back pain which was related to job burden, the physical working environment, work demand, work self-regulation and culture. 42 persons had neck pains which was related to past injuries and number of years on the job. 10 persons had arm pain which was related to the average time spent in housework(p<0.05). Our study demonstrated that musculo skeletal pain experienced by caddies is correlated with various work-related stress factors. Therefore, improvement in those factors, safety education, and precautionary measures should be taken for prevention.

The purpose of this study was to do the surveillance study of sports injuries which were suffered to National players of South Korea Team during the summer Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou. All medical staffs of Korea Delegation were asked to report all sports injuries newly incurred during the Games on injury report form, and the physicians made clinical diagnoses of the injuries. Total 725 injuries (430 athletes) were reported, and 288 injuries (209 athletes) were newly incurred: 68 injuries (58 athletes) were recurrent with previous history, resulting in total incidence rate: 45.5 injuries/1000 athlete exposures (AE) (95% confidence interval [CI]: 40.1-50.6 injuries/1000 AE) and incidence proportion: 26% (95% CI: 23-29). The new injury was highest in athletics (n=37, 12.8%), hockey (n=26, 9.0%), and basketball (n=23, 8.0%). While 162 injuries (56.2%) were incurred during practice, 126 injuries (43.8%) were incurred in competition. The most frequent diagnoses were lateral ankle ligament sprain (n=28, 9.7%, 95% CI: 6.3-13.1), calf muscle cramp (n=23, 95% CI: 4.9-11.1), and hamstring strain (n=22, 95% CI: 4.6-10.7). The relapsed injury was highest in athletics (n=16, 23.5%), basketball (n=6, 8.8%), and wrestling (n=5, 7.4%). While 50 injuries (73.5%) were recurred during practice, 18 injuries (26.5%) were recurred in competition. The most frequent diagnoses of relapsed injury were calf muscle cramp (n=11, 16.2%, 95% CI: 7.4-25.0), low back strain (n=6, 8.8%, 95% CI: 2.1-15.6), and hamstring strain (n=6, 8.8%, 95% CI: 2.1-15.6). Our data indicated incidence rates, incidence proportions, characteristics and frequent diagnoses of acute and recurrent sports injuries during the games, therefore these results could provide relevant information for the sports injury prevention at elite level.

The purpose of this study is to investigate prevalence of golf-related pain and understand the regional distribution of golf-related pain and associated factors. We sended e-mail questionnaire to one thousand thirty four amateur golfers among members of a internet golf site in the period from August, 2001 to December, 2001. There were 602 respondent of whom 63.5% reported recent pain associated with golf activity. Based on regional pain distribution, upper extremity including shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand was the most common area of pain complaints, followed by spine, lower extremity, fib and chest in order. Based on anatomical distribution, back was the most common pain site. Overuse factor like number of round per week was associated with golf-related pain. Golf itself imposes relatively more burden on upper extremity and spine. Among risk factors, overuse was associated with development of golf-related pain.
