초·중등학교에서 사용하는 교과서는 학생들에게 매우 큰 영향을 미친다. 특히 교과서 속 등장인물을 통해 학생들은 다양한 직업에 대해 이해하고 직업에 대한 가치관을 형성하게 된다. 그렇다면 교과서에 나타나는 공무원은 어떻게 묘사되고 있을까? 본 연구는 우리나라 초·중·고등학교에서 사용 중인 교과서에 대한 내용분석을 통해 여기에 답하고자 하였다. 분석결과 대부분 선하고 유능한 모습으로 그려졌으며, 특히 교사와 소방관에 대한 긍정 묘사 비율이 높았다. 그러나 학교급이 올라갈수록 긍정적인 묘사가 확연히 줄어들었고, 상급학교 교과서에 주로 등장하는 대통령과 장차관은 주로 남성인데다 다른 직종에 비해 부정적인 묘사가 많았다. 여성 공무원은 남성에 비해 긍정적인 묘사가 많으나, 등장 빈도도 높지 않고, 주로 교사 직종에 집중되어 있었다. 향후 교과서 개정 시 다양한 직종의 여성 공무원을 포함할 필요가 있으며, 고위 공무원을 남성의 영역으로 그리고 부정적으로 인식하게 할 우려가 있는 부분에 대해서는 적절한 수정이 필요하다고 생각된다. Textbooks used for primary and secondary education have a great impact on students. In particular, students get to know about various occupations and develop attitudes toward them by observing the characters in their textbooks. Then, how are public servants described in them? This study offers an answer to this question by conducting content analysis on the school textbooks. The results show that public servants were generally described as benevolent and competent, and that teachers and fire-fighters are most positively described. However, as the grade level progresses, positive descriptions decreased significantly. And the president, ministers, and vice ministers, who usually appear in middle and high school textbooks, were mostly men and depicted in a more negative tone, compared to other occupations. Appearing less frequently than males, but highly concentrated in the teaching profession, females were more positively described than males. Our analysis implies that when revising the textbooks in the future it is necessary to include more female public servants from various sectors and to address the concerns that high ranking public servants are mostly men and tend to be negatively described.
