To reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide of the vehicle, Motor Driven Power Steering system or Electro Hydaulic Power Steering system is generally adopted in passenger vehicle. Both systems can eliminate the P/S pump driven by engine-pulley of the conventional power steering system. However in most of commercial vehicle these systems are not applied. Because each steering system is lack of steering capacity to apply singly to commercial vehicle of high gross vehicle weight. To resolve the capacity problem, this paper proposed a new concept of steering composed of EHPS motor pump and column mounted MDPS unit and ball-nut steering gearbox for commercial vehicle fuel saving. This hybrid Motor Driven Power Steering system, so called, can meet steering capacity without several change of mass-produced electric steering in passenger vehicle, and can also reduce the fuel consumtion in commercial vehicle.

Steer By Wire (SBW) system is a prospective new chassis technology which eliminates mechanical linkages between steering wheel and steering gearbox. SBW system steers a vehicle by using actuators which receive vehicle information from sensors. This paper proposes an dual motor Independent-type steer by wire system which has two steering actuators in RH and LH so that the steered angle of front tires can be controlled by ECU respectively. This system has merits over the conventional SBW system in that it can highly enhance system Fail-safety and realize ideal handling performance at various driving situation by controlling right and left wheels independently. First, the configuration, features, and the control signal flow of the proposed SBW system will be mentioned, and then the verification results of control logic followed. The verification was carried out by comparing the results from HILS with those from test vehicle.

The procedure of developing the Independent-type SBW is followed below: a HILS (Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation) system and validating the system, Designing the layout of system to tit a vehicle with the Independent-type SBW, and analyzing the system layout, describing a manufacturing and testing vehicle equipped with the Independent-type SBW system, and finally laying the future works open based on the test results.

In order to improve driver convenience, electronic tilt&tele column is applied a full sized car. To operate electronic tilt&tele, it needs two motors and one electronic controller. Because of high cost component parts, it’s difficult to apply to a midsize car. Meanwhile, to cope with regulations of fuel efficiency and emission, Motor driven power steering system is applied to a full sized car from a small car. But MDPS also consist of high cost component parts(motor and electronic controller). This paper proposed the MDPS Motor-driven electronic tilt&tele column system which has single motor and an integrated electronic controller and introduced the detailed design study and evaluation results.

This paper descries design parameters of Ackerman steering geometry influencing on vehicle handling performances. It is assumed that the Ackerman steering geometry should be designed by considering tire characteristics especially regarding lateral force and these design parameters are related to a performance limit, response, and traceability. The test design plan consists of three conditions: turning concentric circle test, step steer test, and double lane changes. These test conditions follow ISO or test standard of Hyundai Motor Company. The influence of the proposed assumption has been verified by using computer simulation.

The Steer-By-Wire system can have great advantages over the conventional due to its high degree of freedom. Vehicle package, crashworthiness and dynamic performance would be made better by Steer-By-Wire. In spite of these benefits, fail-safety is the most critical problem to make it available. This paper first presents an Independent-type Steer-By-Wire system with dual motor in steering actuator. This Independent-type Steer-By-Wire system has merits over the conventional SBW system in that it highly enhances system safety and can realize ideal handling performance by controlling right and left wheels independently. The system with dual motor enables the actuator to overcome the shortage in fail-safety. The. motor is controlled by each ECU respectively. Secondly, the Independent-type Steer-By-Wire system was implemented in a vehicle and then evaluated in objective and subjective manner. Finally, the future works based on the test results follows.
