본 논문은 그동안 조명받지 못했던 다산의 미적 태도를 살핌으로써 다산을 더욱 깊이 이해하고자 한 것이다. 먼저는 미美와 선善에 대한 다산의 심미 태도를 살펴보았다. 다산의 아름다움은 기본적으로 도덕적 선과 관련이 깊다. 선善은 악惡에 대응되는 의미를 지니면서 한편으로는 현실을 개선한다는 의미도 있다. 다산은 아름다움(美)과 선善은 이곳에 있으므로 이곳에서 최선을 다하는 것이 가장 좋은 것이라 생각했다. 다산은 원시 유가 경전으로 돌아가 자신의 혜안으로 그 정신을 재해석 한 후에 지금의 일상과 현실에 미와 선을 적용하고자 했다. 이를 바탕으로 다산의 문예 미학을 살펴보았다. 다산은 문학은 도와 덕을 싣는 도구이어야 한다고 생각했다. 문학은 기교를 구사하거나 음풍농월이나 유희를 읊어서는 안 되며 예禮를 돕고 나라와 백성을 구제해야 한다고 생각했다. 다산은 도는 한 세상을 바로잡아 구제하는 것이라고 말함으로써 개인의 내면 수양을 강조하는 전통 성리학자들과 달리 사회와 현실에 관심을 두었다. 다산은 문학의 가치가 사회적 약자의삶에 공감하고 이들 옆에 있으면서 이들의 목소리에 귀를 기울이며 도와주는 데 있다고 보았다. 세상과 인간을 향한 바로 이 지점에 다산의아름다운 심미 태도가 빛을 발한다. 다산은 권력과 부당한 현실에 대해서는 격발하고 분노했지만 사회적 약자에 대해서는 한없이 너그럽고따뜻했다. 고통받는 백성과 소외된 인간에 대해서는 연민과 공감의 시선을 보냈다. 그리하여 다산의 문학은 격발하면서도 온화하고 풍자적이면서도 따뜻하다. 인간과 사회를 고쳐서 더 나아진 세계를 만들어 가는 것이 다산의 선善이고 미美였다. 다산은 세속(일상)과 문예를 통일하여 청淸과 아雅의 미의식을 지향했다. 다산은 지금 세속이라는 공간에 애정을 갖되 문학으로 형상화할 때리俚와 탁濁으로 흐르는 것을 경계하고 맑은 운치를 지닐 것을 요구했다. 속俗에서 아취雅趣를 기르기 위해 고古를 배울 것을 요청했다. 18세기 후반 실학자들의 시풍이 대체로 기궤첨신奇詭尖新의 시풍을 지향한 것과 비교해 보면 다산의 문예 정취가 갖는 특성이 더욱 선명하게 드러난다고 하겠다. This paper aims to deepen our understanding of Tasan Jeong Yak-yong by examining the aesthetic attitudes of his that has been neglected. First, it examined Tasan’s aesthetic attitudes toward beauty and goodness. The beauty of Tasan’s is fundamentally related to moral goodness. Goodness is the counterpart of evil, but it also means improving reality. The idea is that beauty and goodness are here at once, so it’s best here to make the best effort. Returning to the original Confucian scriptures and reinterpreting their spirit with his own insight, Tasan sought to apply beauty and goodness to the present day and reality. This brings us to Tasan’s literary aesthetic. He believed that literature should be a tool of help and virtue. He believed that literature should not be skilful, nor should it recite merrymaking, but should help with virtue and save the country and its people. Tasan was concerned with society and reality, unlike traditional Confucian scholars, who emphasized the inner cultivation of the individual by saying that the truth is to rectify and save the world. He saw the value of literature as empathizing with the lives of the marginalized, standing beside them, listening to their voices, and helping them. It is at this point that Tasan’s beautiful aesthetic attitude towards the world and human beings shines through. While he was furious and angry about power and injustice, he was generous and warm toward the underprivileged. He was compassionate and empathetic toward the suffering people and marginalized human beings. Thus, his literature is fiery yet gentle, satirical yet warm. It was the goodness and beauty of Tasan’s to fix human beings and society to create a better world. By unifying the secular (everyday life) and the literary, Tasan aimed for Cheong (淸) – clearness- and Ah (雅) -elegance- aesthetic. Tasan demanded that one should have affection for the secular world, but be wary of flowing into Li(俚)-coarse- and Tak (濁)-cloudy- when expressing oneself in literature, and have a clear mind. He asked them to learn the classics in order to cultivate elegance(雅趣) in the secular world. Compared to the poetic style of the late 18th century, which was largely oriented toward Kigeyichoemshin(奇詭尖新= so fresh and strange, as cutting-edge and new), the characteristics of the literary style of Tasan can be more clearly seen.
